Epic Dungeon Getting New Content, Sequel Could Carry Multiplayer

Epic_Dungeon_2

Over on the Eyehook Games blog, Michael Muir has posted some thoughts on bringing in new changes and additions to his hit Xbox Live indie game Epic Dungeon. If the developer follows up on his word, we can expect an update(s) packing more map layouts, items, encounters (perhaps even boss battles), along with multiple difficulty levels, a medal/achievement system and online scoreboards added to the game.

Before any of that can happen however, the title will have to be converted to the XNA 4.0 framework (currently 3.1), which Muir describes as “a fair amount of effort.” He hopes to pick back up on EpDun’s development once the conversion is complete.

Perhaps even bigger news than all that is the mentioning of a sequel to the title. One that would carry co-op, more classes and separate skill trees — all of which wouldn’t be able to make it into the original. No solid dates for any of this so we’ll just have to be patient, but it’s great to hear we’ll be getting more of what we already love.

Budget Biker: OSR Unhinged Hits XBLIG

OSR_Unhinged_Released

Riddlesoft has released its platform racer sequel OSR Unhinged, available now via the Xbox Live Marketplace for just $1 (80 MS Points.) The follow-up to XBLIG Old School Racer, Unhinged offers good fun for those looking for a Trials/Joe Danger-like experience on the cheap.

Players race through a variety of different stages that drop all sorts of obstacles in the way including gravity fields, moving platforms, lava, and those familiar spheres. Collect tokens, make good time and try to reach the top of the HoF global scoreboards.

As always a demo is available to try, but it won’t be difficult to pry a dollar away from your wallet if you’re at all into wacky retro racing games.

Chu’s Dynasty Continues Xbox Live Indie Games Uprising

Chu's_Dynasty_Released

The Indie Games Winter Uprising train continues to chug along the tracks, this time around offering up TribeToy’s gorgeous fighting title Chu’s Dynasty, now available for purchase and download on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Blending the fun of Super Smash Bros. with the deep fighting mechanics of Street Fighter, most will find the game easy to learn but hard to master. Characters not only have basic and special moves, they also have combos, counters, energy forms and time manipulation to throw in the mix. I downloaded the game last night and trust me on this, you’ll want to run through the tutorials before you jump in to really grasp a hold of all the tools you have at your disposal.

The game brings four unique characters each with their own campaign, offers up to four player offline play, and includes Versus and Team Versus Modes.

Chu's_Dynasty_Released_01

Unfortunately, the facts that it’s selling for $3 instead of $1, doesn’t pack a myriad of characters, and lacks online multiplayer has some people (comment section) in a tissy. To which I can only respond by encouraging these folks to check themselves before they riggity-wreck themselves. Seriously, go out there and find a better console fighting game in the $10 range, let alone a third of that price point. My guess is you’ll be searching for a long while.

Chu’s Dynasty is available now for 240 MS Points ($3) and is a steal for the cost if you’re at all into the genre.

More Indie Games Winter Uprising Titles Arrive, Event Extended Through December

asteroids_01

Having just completed Epic Dungeon (Geoff got to it first from our review pile, but you can read my thoughts over on Gaming Dead if you need to pad the reasons why you should purchase), I feel it’s a fine time to catch up on what has released following suit for the Xbox Live Indie Games Winter Uprising event.

Retro-flavored Ubergridder joins shooter Break Limit and shooter sequel Decimation X3, along with insane one-button action game Asteroids Do Concern Me and an update to shooter Hypership Out of Control. All games are available now for just a dollar each.

In related news, IGWU promotion head and Zeboyd Games front-man Robert Boyd has shared that the event will be extended through the rest of December, instead of the previously stated first week of the month. The decision was made due to a portion of the games still working through the final development push.

While that may sound like a delay of sorts, Boyd makes it clear that the deadline set-up by the promotion has actually helped get the games along to where they stand currently. He sounds confident that all of the title’s will still make a December launch. Personally, I don’t mind too much as they’ve already released a stack for us to play. Over a dozen good to amazing games spanning only a week seemed a bit daunting to me anyway — now time’s on my side.

Here are the descriptions along with corresponding screens for the four new releases plus one update:

Break_Limit

Break Limit
“Prepare to go mind-numbingly fast as you Blast, Smash and Break Limit through every one and thing in your way! Powerful weapons that get stronger as you play, will help to power a ship that becomes an invincible wrecking ball while accelerating. Alpha Centauri will never be the same! Featuring online scoreboards for Gold subscribers, and local scoreboards to prove you’re better than your siblings!”

Hypership

Hypership Out of Control (Update)
“Space is a dangerous placed for even the most seasoned starship pilot, full of asteroids, multicolored floating blocks, and space mines. It’s even more dangerous when you your accelerator is stuck to the floor and your brakes are out. Can you survive long enough to get that elusive high score or are you destined to add a new crater to the face of an unsuspecting asteroid?”

Ubergridder

Ubergridder
“You are in deep space, and nasty one-eyed tentacle toting aliens have broken your spaceship. Race against time and hungry aliens in this retro-inspired action game. You control Robert the maintenance robot and your quest is to repair the ship, one section at a time!”

Asteroids_02

Asteroids Do Concern Me
“”Out beyond the edge of the universe. Far past any celestial wilderness you could hope to imagine, lies a vast ocean of impenetrable rock…”. Test your piloting skills in this addictive one button action game. With 4 different modes ranging from Classic to Double Rainbow. The odds of surviving this game are 3720 to 1. Have you got the minerals?”

Decimation_X3

Decimation X3
“DECIMATION X3 (4 player shoot ‘em up): The thrilling sequel to the #1 Japan hit and proud member of the INDIE GAMES WINTER UPRISING. Back with intensified gameplay, extra power-ups, more firepower, improved retro graphics, huge bosses, and a beautifully remixed IMPHENZIA soundtrack. Developed by the “empower the player” philosophy of XONA GAMES, award-winning creators of DUALITY ZF and SCORE RUSH.”

VICTORY! Xbox Live Indie Games moved back to Games & Demos

DashboardUpdate004

Not 20 minutes after I posted an article about a developer abandoning the XBLIG platform did I find out that XBLIG itself was actually moved to Games & Demos. Microsoft must have seen the error of their ways — or possibly all the negative press it was continually generating –  and made the switch earlier this morning.

Take heart in this decision indie developers of the world, if you fight hard enough you can get the big companies to take notice. Were it not for your combined efforts along with all the media outlets reporting on the issues Microsoft would not have budged on the issue. This is a serious win for any and all indie devs who ever had aspirations of releasing their game on Xbox Live Indie Games.

Today shall be know as VM day… victory over Microsoft.
