Brace yourselves – it’s almost that time of year again. The date bouncing around right now is July 12th, and it looks like there’s going to be 12 days of Steam-related festivities and bargains on their way. Confirmed via delving into the Steam product registry, it looks like there’s going to be a new indie bundle on sale each of the first 11 days, with day 12 likely being the traditional ‘encore’, with the best-sellers and favourites returning to their top discounts for one last go. Here’s the rather impressive indie lineup:

Day 1: Anomaly Warzone Earth, The Baconing, Cave Story+, EDGE, Lone Survivor.

Day 2: Botanicula, E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy, Oil Rush, Splice, Universe Sandbox.

Day 3: Bit Trip Beat, Braid, Bunch of Heroes, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Runespell Overture.

Day 4: A Valley Without Wind, Atom Zombie Smasher, Blocks that Matter, Sanctum, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP.

Day 5: Audio Surf, Gemini Rue, Greed Corp, Tiny Bang Story, Ys: The Oath in Felghana.

Day 6: AAAAAAAA For The Awesome, Defcon, Space Chem, Ticket to Ride, Trauma.

Day 7: Avadon, Dungeons of Dredmor, Qube, Vessel, Zombie Driver.

Day 8: Demolition Inc, Hoard, Sol Exodus, Swords and Soldiers HD, Wings of Prey.

Day 9: Capsized, Jamestown, Revenge of the Titans, VVVVVV, Zeno Clash.

Day 10: All Zombies Must Die, Beat Hazard, Bit Trip Runner, Eufloria, Machinarium.

Day 11: Hydrophobia, Orion: Dino Beatdown, Star Ruler, Waveform, World of Goo.

A couple of non-indie bits sneaking in there, such as Ys: The Oath in Felghana on Day 5 and Wings of Prey on Day 8, but those are both great games that I’d recommend anyway. Day 11 looks to be the most mixed bag, with the risible Orion: Dino Beatdown and the damp squib that was Hydrophobia being included, but the interestingly ambitious Star Ruler and pretty solid Waveform balancing it out somewhat. There’s also a rather hefty list of publisher bundles and other sales packages, which includes (but may not be limited to) this load:

1C Collection Pack

Adam’s Venture Complete Bundle Retail

Anno 2070 Pack

Batman Arkham Asylum, Batman Arkham City and Batman Gotham City Imposters Bundle

Bethesda Collection (BRINK, Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, Hunted)

Bioshock Franchise Pack

BIT.TRIP.BEAT Bundle

BIT.TRIP.RUNNER Bundle

Carpe Fulgur Bundle (Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale, Chantelise, Fortune Summoners)

Civilization Collection

Command and Conquer Franchise

Dawn of War Franchise Pack

Dead Island Complete

Duke Nukem Bundle

Foreign Legion Bundle

Kalypso Collection (Tropico, Jagged Alliance, Airline Tycoon, etc)

Majesty Franchise

Paradox Collection (Magicka + dlcs, Mount and Blade, etc)

Pendulo Adventure Pack

Railworks 3 – Summer Sale Collection

Red Orchestra Franchise Pack (ROW)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Bundle

Saints Row: The Third Franchise Pack

Sniper Elite Franchise Pack

Square Hit Collection (Hitman, Tomb Raider, Just Cause 2, Deus Ex, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Quantum Conundrum, Thief)

Stardock Collection Pack

Strategy First Complete Pack

Sword of the Stars Franchise

THQ Collection (Dawn of War, Warhammer, Stalker, Nexuiz, Darksiders, Metro 2033, etc)

Total War: Shogun 2 Pack

Victoria Franchise

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Pack

Wings of Prey Pack

Some nice indie stuff in there, too. Knowing Valve, and their close relationships with a lot of indie studios, I expect we’ll see a lot of the games in the above bundles getting summer-themed bonuses, achievement goals and levels. We’ll be tracking the indie deals of the day and dropping recommendations and mini-reviews on each day of this coming Summer discountstravaganza, so stay tuned and keep your eye on IGM in the coming days.

As you should be quite aware, the 7 Day First Person Shooter (7DFPS) development challenge took place last week and the results started blasting their way in on Friday. Of the many that took part, Wolfire Games were one studio to do so and what they’ve created is quite special. The purpose of 7DFPS was to find something fresh to get excited about within the first person shooter – a genre that has become dull and over saturated due to its popularity in recent years. It’s also a means to have some fun – let’s not forget.

The direction some have taken in order to create their FPS in just seven days has led to some crazy and exciting results. Wacky, is a good word for some of them. Wolfire decided to take things a slightly different direction with Receiver; one that could be described as doing to gun mechanics what they did to melee combat in Overgrowth.

They set out to create an almost HUD-removing experience with a Colt 1911 A1. You check your ammo by taking the clip out of the gun and looking at how many bullets are left, rather than glancing at a number on the edge of the screen. The levels inside consist of a randomized building complex (nod to replay value) and your goal is to make it past the turrets and shock drones with a cassette tape to uncover the secrets of the Mindkill.

As you can tell, the game itself seems a little clunky but for seven days work that’s pretty good. You’re supposed to play it quite slowly that’s for sure, being wary of what may be lying around the next corner and where the nearest cover is – pretty intense stuff.

The physics on the bullets and the enemies is a very neat addition which gives rewards to players who take their time and aim for certain targets rather than wasting bullets on blasting like crazy.

It’s definitely an interesting way to approach an FPS and one you can check out for free if you’ve pre-ordered Overgrowth. If you haven’t, then you can purchase Receiver over on its official website.

We’re told that there’ll be a wide variety of enemy types for the player to sink his or her knives into, resulting in goretastic splatters of fleshy entrails all over the dungeon floors. That’s a bitter pill for the interior decorator to swallow, but it’s an enthralling exercise in merciless schadenfreude for the rest of us, so “thumbs up,” say I.

As you’d rightly expect, Brimstone comes with all the character development systems that conventionalise the dungeon crawler genre. In theory, that means that the game will spring to life with the air of grace known as long-term replayability, so you’d best be prepared to set aside a weekend or six before your festering social crises come to a vociferous head.

More information on the Punchbag ethos can be found on its official website.

You may be interested in:

Then guns get involved, lots of animal slaughter and things quickly escalate from there.

So here’s the rundown – Super Amazing Wagon Adventure plays out in a set of randomly complied short “scenes”. These are switched between every 3-30 seconds, so you could blowing up buffalo, then outrunning an avalanche before running over snakes. These scenes all sit comfortably within 2D shooter territory, so the variation isn’t hugely vast as a lot of the change seems to be what you’re shooting at and sometimes what with. Death seems much more likely in these scenes, with characters getting mauled by various hostile creatures. Why let these characters be anonymous though? The trailer encourages the player to create their friends so you can laugh at them when they die horrifically. It seems you can name them, choose their gender and choose from a list of facial features, all within the game’s pixelated existence.

The developer also reckons that the game will provide you with hours of playing time, but that seems to rest on whether or not you’re into unlocking various things. New wagons with special weapons and other “characteristics” are available if you complete certain challenges. If that’s not enough to keep you going, then maybe just finding out more of the game’s differing scenarios will float your boat. No? How about Survival Mode – facing against infinite creatures for as long as you can.

As with many games with trailers emerging this week, Super Amazing Wagon Adventure is being entered into the Dream.Build.Play competition. Now that I have finally taken a couple of 8-bit cars for a spin, I can happily recommend this game to anybody – excluding kids, because there’s shitloads of killing going on and that’s probably not good for kids (right mainstream media?). I had the pleasure of trying the game out on a PS Vita after chatting with Leonard Paul, also known as FreakyDNA, who worked on the game’s superb soundtrack. Leonard was casually leaning by the area where the game was displayed on the PlayStation show floor, my colleague and good friend, Erik Johnson, worked some of his charm and I was able to meet the man behind so many righteous chiptunes.

For the uninitiated, Retro City Rampage is very reminiscent of the first couple of Grand Theft Auto titles. It has an old-school feel down to the core and spreads it through the visuals, sounds and most of the gameplay. The game mode I stumbled upon first gave me two minutes to do as much damage to people/the city/cars/police as possible – thereby: the rampage. At first, I played awfully and failed to reach any of the game’s high score thresholds, but a bit of practice soon remedied that. I ran around shooting people as you might expect, blasting them with a shotgun or a handgun, then using a katana to cut their 8-bit limbs, but the real game changer was the super-effective rocket launcher which led me to my high score.

I was surprised but very glad to find this much fun within just a couple minutes of picking the game up. One thing to mark up though, and to be honest this is probably native to the Vita, the controls took some getting used to. That being said, Retro City Rampage feels as if it should fit on any device, any platform and any OS quite comfortably. Hopefully, using controls that were more familiar to me would alleviate that issue – the game was also available for play on the show floor for Xbox but I stuck to the Vita since it was a completely new experience.

In any case, I ran around killing people and blowing cars up until I had my fill – although, really, I hadn’t – but I backed out and decided to try the Story Mode. Now, it’s pretty difficult to pay attention to story with all the hubbub at E3, but it seemed obvious that it parodied specific games and general tropes of video games past. It was great to see that Retro City Rampage wasn’t just a one trick pony and borrowed gameplay mechanics from other games in its retro concoction. This seems to bode well for story missions, which will surely be varied to keep gameplay fresh and exciting, all while throwing references to video games and its culture over its shoulder.

In the five minutes of play I was able to get from the story mode, I traversed the map while completing objectives and entering buildings, or entering an area might jump me into a separate stage with separate rules. For example, after running over a bunch of 8-bit pedestrians, I stepped outside and entered what was a platformer/side-scroller area straying from the top-down GTA gameplay. This is equally good news for the game’s 30 challenge levels, which will hopefully carry this torch we refer to as variation.

For me, Retro City Rampage felt amazing but not quite perfect on the Vita. Then again, I don’t own a Vita and have seldom had a chance to play it. Either way, it was fun as hell. The consensus is that the multi-platform release of the game is expected to boast big sales (at least, for indies) and attract plenty of love from press and gamers alike. From presentation to gameplay, Brian Provinciano’s Retro City Rampage is polished through and through – and the good news is that we should be getting our hands on it this summer. First of all, they’ve announced that they will be releasing the Q.U.B.E. soundtrack on May 4th for $5.99/£4.99/€5.99 on iTunes, Amazon and Steam. This will contain over 30 tracks from the game (that’s quite a lot!) and some special tracks to go along with that too.

Secondly, they will be releasing a Collector’s Edition of the game in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in collaboration with Headup Games, which will come with some special extras including the soundtrack. A release date hasn’t been announced but it’s expected in Summer 2012.

Lastly, Q.U.B.E. has been updated to the 1.2 version which fixes many of the bugs in Sector 7 of the game and allows you to customize your keyboard layout. Oh ans they want you to see this:

More information on Q.U.B.E. can be found on the game’s official website.

You may be interested in:
