‘McDroid’ Interview with Laurent Lavigne of Elefantopia

McDROID01-1

IGM had a chance to chat with Laurent Lavigne of Elefantopia on his hectic tower defense game, McDroid. McDroid is a gorgeous cel-shaded tower defense and 3rd person action adventure game where you collect strawberries. The game is currently still in Beta and available for PC, Mac and Linux.

When did you start developing games? What got you into programming and designing?
I started when I was 10, made a few rooms in a first person adventure game on my TI 97, then at 15, I completed the graphics for a game that was inspired by RTYPE, horizontal shooter with wave gun and modular weapon system in the back that doubled as a shield. Sold it to Thalamus, the company went under before the game became anything more than one level on the Amiga but it was a really fun level.

What game inspired you to make games?
RTYPE but MULE and Gauntlet are close second, what am I saying, Marble Madness and Buck Rogers, The Pawn, Tass Time… they all build such a rich canvas of feelings.

What is your favorite indie game right now that you are playing? Why?
I am not playing any indie game at the moment, the free time I have I dedicate to McDROID and the real world. But I did spend hours on FTL and loved it, it was scratching that grinding itch and showed me some really tight gameplay and subtle bindings I’ll re-use.

Cannon Brawl Preview – Worms meets Real Time Strategy

Cannon Brawl is a 2D real time strategy game currently in development for Xbox and PC.  The game features destructible terrain and firing mechanics similar to Worms, but is also all about building towers and expanding your influence around each stage.  The player controls a blimp that handles controlling and commanding the field.  Fly your airship over to your HQ and you’ll be able to select turrets, shields and other towers to build.  When the towers are complete, you can pick them up and fly them to any buildable location within your ‘Sphere of Influence’ – represented by a subtle colored bubble that matches your team.

Cannon Brawl is all about your airship; it’s your general.  Not only does it build and delivery structures, but you also use your blimp to enter both offensive and defensive turrets. Enter a cannon with your airship, then aim and fire Worms-style.  Enter a defensive turret, and use your sticks to direct your protective shields.  You’ll also use your airship to upgrade and repair units – all while cannonballs, lasers, and nukes are flying around.

screenshot003_large

The best thing about Cannon Brawl is the pace of the match.  When you start off, you’ll actually wait a little bit as you take on each task one at a time.  You’ll build some turrets, place them, and take a shot at your opponent every once and awhile.  As more units are placed on the field, the decisions and tasks that you have quickly multiply and things become hectic really quickly.  It’s one of the more manic RTS games that I’ve played.  The simplified units and action oriented gameplay should draw in gamers that don’t traditionally like the strategy genre – while strategy fans may not like the fast pace of Cannon Brawl’s matches.

Cannon Brawl is very polished with bright colorful graphics and dynamic battle music.  Upon completion the game will feature over 6 different airships, a single player campaign, local and online multiplayer.

Stay up to date on Cannon Brawl, by checking out the game’s official website.

‘Worlds Of Magic’ A Brand New Fantasy 4X Looking For Your Help

Worlds Of Magic

Strategy games have been making a comeback after lying somewhat dormant for a few years. On the back of this we have seen several rather interesting Kickstarters and games coming out that have really added a great deal to the often forgotten genre.

Last week, Wastelands Interactive, a well-established Polish developer who has released a number of historic strategy games over the years, started their Kickstarter campaign for their latest venture, Worlds Of Magic.

Worlds Of Magic is Wastelands Interactive’s attempt at creating a spiritual successor to the great 4x Master Of Magic by setting Worlds Of Magic in a rich fantasy world. In Worlds Of Magic you will be able to choose from ten leaders to take control over, to rule the lands. However, there is an option to create your own if you would rather tailor the game more to your own personal style.

Wastelands Interactive is dedicated to making Worlds Of Magic the true successor to Masters Of Magic and feel they are the right team to do it. Their aim is capture a lot of what made the original great and to build upon its core foundations whilst adding in extras to really create a new and exciting game.

Worlds Of Magic is currently looking for additional funding on Kickstarter after Wastelands Interactive started up their Kickstarter earlier this month. Although there is still over twenty days left so far the funding has been very encouraging with the campaign currently raising a third of the total needed.

If you are interested in finding out more about Worlds Of Magic be sure to check out Wastelands Interactive’s Kickstarter for additional information. If you like what you see consider supporting the developer and help make Worlds Of Magic a reality.

‘Fez’ Finally Makes The Leap To PC

fez ss01

One of the most talked about indie games ever is finally making its way to PC after spending one year on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Fez the genre defining smash is at long last going to make the leap to the PC which will no doubt put a smile on many PC gamers face.

Fez is focused around the main character Gomez who appears to live in a two-dimensional world, this is the case until he comes across a mysterious artefact which grants him a magical fez allowing him to perceive a third dimension.

Fez is a puzzle platformer in which you must use your new power to navigate around the world in ways previously unbeknown to Gomez in this beautifully created three-dimensional world. Fez has won many awards in its history both after release and prior, and quite rightly so considering just how bigger impact this game has had on the community at large.

PAX East: Capy’s Super T.I.M.E. Force – Strategy Upgrade

stfweb

Last year at PAX East, Capybara’s Super T.I.M.E. Force was the game that had me wetting myself with anticipation.  I was lucky enough to play the newest build this year at PAX and was taken aback by the new time control and strategy elements.  The game hasn’t changed.  You still play as a member of the elite time travelers force known as the Temporal Inevitability Manipulation Experts – or T.I.M.E., the big changes in this game are the balance and new features.  Last year, when your character died you were automatically returned to the start of the level.  It kept the game hectic and fun as you plowed through enemies with the gatling gun, sniper or shield character.  Now that the game is closer to release on XBLA, it is clear that our temporal experts have a lot more control of time than we were lead to believe.  When you die, you now have full control of rewinding time and spawning a new character in whatever location that you like.  Deaths are clearly marked with red skulls on the timeline so that you can focus on saving past instances of yourself.

3-26-2013 2-44-33 PM

The ability to control your spawn point in the timeline adds a ton of strategy and that’s needed with the new time constraint to each level.  Each level now features a time limit along with a certain number of lives.  This limit can luckily be extended by picking up time bonuses throughout the level.  The new version also featured a brand new super funky fresh Lizard with sunglasses character.  This newest member of the force is all about melee combat and can even scratch and reflect bullets.  The game also boasts a brand new co-op mode so that this intense and fun shooter can be shared with a friend.

Super T.I.M.E. Force is shaping up to be a huge hit for Xbox Live.  It’s instantly fun and over the past year the team has added more depth, challenge and multiplayer features.  Super T.I.M.E. Force is expected to be released for XBLA Spring 2013.  You can stay up to date on the game by checking out Capy’s official blog.

Indie Links Round-Up: Interlocked

juegos017.005

If you’ve got a need for speed, today’s Indie Links are for you, with the results of the Indie Speed Run game jam… as well as plenty of other fast-paced games, and maybe a few not-so-fast-paced ones too to shake things up.

Light Fighters (Indie Gamer Chick)
“There is nothing really wrong with Light Fighters besides not being fun.  The game didn’t crash.  There weren’t physics glitches.  Everything wrong with it can be boiled down to “this game probably had no chance of being entertaining from the onset and the developer should have recognized that and tried something else.”  Even if the ships were more interesting, or the bullets they fired more exotic, or the AI less unfair, or the reload-rates less painfully slow, or if multiplayer matches didn’t all boil down to glorified button mashers that leave little to no room for strategy, or if it had something to keep track of what your best times are in meteor mode, or if the meteors weren’t so fucking spongy, or all of the above, Light Fighters still would have been boring.”

Atomic Creep Spawner!! And Ore Chasm Are Your Ludum Dare 25 Winners (IndieGames)
“The top overall games from Ludum Dare’s 25th competition have been decided, after judges played through 1,327 entries. deepnight’s Atomic Creep Spawner!! takes home the gold for the 48-hour compo and Black Ships Fill the Sky’s Ore Chasm (I see what you did there) wins gold for the 72-hour jam.”

Joe Danger‘s Most Impressive Stunt Is How Good His Mobile Game Turned Out (Kotaku)
“When I first caught wind of Hello Games bringing their stunt-racing hero Joe Danger to iOS, I imagined a straight port of the original PlayStation Network release, complete with a screen cluttered with virtual controls. Instead they’ve delivered a game that fully embraces the touch-based platform, one that’s as refreshing to play as it was for the company’s founder to develop.”

Play Free Indie Speed Run Games Now (IndieGames)
Indie Speed Run’s 48-hour jam games are now available to play for free. While they await judgment from the star-studded cast including Minecraft’s Notch, Passage’s Jason Rohrer, Journey’s Kellee Santiago, and Limbo’s Dino Patti, here are just a few highlights of the hundreds of games available (with more being added throughout the day).”

Indie Speed Run Games Now Available For The Public To Play (Polygon)
“Games that were created as part of the Indie Speed Run game jam are now available on the event’s official website for the public to play. The Indie Speed Run is a global game jam where teams of one to four developers create a game in any 48-hour span during the game jam period. The most recent jam ran from Nov. 28, 2012 to Jan. 6, 2013.”

We Can Finally See The Dark Side Of The Moon (Rock, Paper, Shotgun)
“Lovely Love-maker Eskil Steenberg has finally revealed what his next project will be. He just popped a video up on Youtube, showing off the prototype for a Dark Side Of The Moon, a “real-time strategy stealth action game”. The video is a quick look at some of the units he’s preparing for the battlefield. It looks like he’ll be focusing on smaller battles, rather than turning out a StarCraft clone.”

Juego Rancheros’ Fistful Of Indies: January 2013 (Venus Patrol)
“Every month, as part of the regular monthly meetings of the Austin, TX independent game community JUEGOS RANCHEROS, we do a very casual & chatty rundown of the ten or so games from the previous month for the audience, to give people — especially those curious onlookers from outside the indie community itself — a look at what they may have missed. The featured games are both local and global, and both indie and, on occasion, a bit-bigger-budget — what binds them together is simply that they’re all amazing.”

‘Worlds Of Magic’ A Brand New Fantasy Strategy Bringing Back The ’90s

Worlds Of Magic

It’s always great to see new strategy games being developed as this has been a somewhat slow genre over the past few years. Wastelands Interactive who may be best known for the creation of Strategic War In Europe are currently developing a brand new 4X fantasy strategy game Worlds Of Magic.

Wastelands Interactive state that this is a project of love and their attempt at recreating the classic 4X Master Of Magic. The hope is to create World Of Magic with heavy influence from the ‘90s classic really bringing back what was so great about Master Of Magic but in a much more modern-day  presentation.

In order to keep every Worlds Of Magic game unique expect the implementation of a procedurally generated universe, ensuring every game is an interesting and unique experience for the players.   Expect all the planes to be randomised each time allowing for a great deal of replayability and unpredictable gameplay as you battle for dominance across this magic infused universe.

Worlds Of Magic will also draw from the D20 system which resembles version 3.5 of the AD&D rules. The D20 system will largely be implemented in the game, however in areas including mana and spell casting it will use a D20 inspired system that makes use of mana points.

Worlds Of Magic

Worlds Of Magic hopes to be the game that rekindles peoples love for the classic 4X fantasy genre. Although Paradox Interactive released Warlock Master Of The Arcane the other year that does bring back some of classic World Of Magic vibe we are yet to see how Worlds Of Magic will stack up.

Although not much information has been released yet Worlds Of Magic aims to be the next big 4X. Be sure to follow the development on their facebook page and the official Wastelands Interactive site.
