Just yesterday the latest trailer came out from Latana Games highlighting a bit more of the story behind their up and coming new title Children Of Liberty.

We have eagerly been following developments of Children Of Liberty over last year, and have featuring several articles about the game development (15 Indie Games That Will Surprise You In 2012, Children Of Liberty Gets A GDC Trailer Alpha Now Playable) and we even managed to interview Latana Games about it at the Boston Festival Of Indie Games.

You may think we are slightly obsessed with Children Of Liberty and for the most part we are, but there is very good reasons for it. Just watch the latest trailer below and all will be made clear as to why we are so transfixed on this new game:

Children Of Liberty is a stealth action game like no other, as it throws the player into a 3D world whilst only utilizing 2D gameplay mechanics. Yes that’s right and although the maths may not add up it seems to work fantastically, and brings with it a whole new gameplay mechanic.

It looks fantastic as the art has been lovingly crafted into this brilliant comic book style design that deliberately depicts the assets as paper-thin cut-outs All this feeds into a very visually appealing game that if it manages to play even half as well as it looks I have no doubt that Children Of Liberty will be a very special game indeed.

Children Of Liberty is still very much in the early stages of its development cycle but is already starting to look fantastic. Currently Lantana Games are in the alpha funding stage and are looking for your help to continue funding the game.

If you are interested in Children Of Liberty but you are not quite sure if it is your type of game, be sure to head over to the Lantana Games website to try out the online alpha demo.
I am surprised I haven’t really heard much about Private Infiltrator before as it sounds like it is completely up my alley. The idea is an arcade-like stealth game created specifically in a noir art style from developer Espionage Noir Productions, I feel the name does say it all about their market.

The whole idea to bring out this highly stylized stealth game is fantastic with the use of lighting really playing a major factor in the whole ambiance of the game setting the scene very nicely for what looks to be a great stealth game and to be honest I feel this genre of late has fallen away a little. Some of the impressive features in the game are:

Arcade-like core mechanics : easy to pick up but hard to master gameplay

Unique Neo-Noir art direction

A great number of security measures : offering many different opportunities to showcase your talent in sneaking and bypassing the obsticales

Multiple soundtracks : Several soundtracks in game along with the option to import your own music

Free content updates

This is not an exhaustive list of all the features that are being implemented into Private Infiltrator but sums it all up pretty well. If this is not enough to sway you however the multiplayer looks devilishly fun and full of whimsy, check out the video below:

The idea of the multiplayer system at the moment is a two player competitive cat and mouse game, the idea factors into spying in its purest form and is a stroke of genius. It is very simple one player plays as the hunter whilst the other the hunted, and did i mention you are boxes. Bazaar i know but I like it.

Private Infiltrator is still under development and is indeed one to watch for the future as it already looks fantastic. You can follow Private Infiltrator on indiedb here, vote for it on the Steam Greenlight community project here. If you would rather wait around The Indie Game Magazine (who can blame you), we will also bring you all the latest as it develops.

Now here’s a surprisingly nice piece of news. Stealthy demolition game Dynamite Jack has already been a reasonable success on PC and iPads, but is now making the jump to Apple’s smaller, even more handheld device. It’s not going to be a separate release, but rather a Universal upgrade to the existing iPad edition. While that’s nice news in of itself, here’s something nicer: For 48 hours after the launch of the updated build (Happening tomorrow, 9th of August), any existing owners will get a copy of the PC version completely free, both in DRM-free and Steam formats. Here’s the official blurb, straight from the developer’s mouth:

Dynamite Jack is coming to the iPhone this Thursday! I’ve made it a Universal update to the iPad version. What this means:

- ALL features included: the main game, the map editor, and all the community maps

- Community maps now include 250+ new maps to play!

- Price $2.99

- Release: Thursday, Aug 9

- Universal update: all iPads, iPhone / iPod touch 3rd gen and newer

So here’s the special launch promotion: for 48 hours following the launch, I’m going to have a big link in the “Community Maps” section to a page where all iOS players can get a code to download Dynamite Jack DRM-Free for Win/Mac/Linux AND get a Steam code for Win/Mac. I always get a handful of emails from people saying “I bought it on the iPad, can I get it on the PC free?”, so I figure, hey, this is a great way to sort that

As a bonus piece of good news, that Community Maps section apparently boasts over 250 fan-made levels. Nothing to be sniffed at. And here’s a trailer, just in case you’ve forgotten what the game looks like:

It’s great to see a developer embracing multi-platform development this much. It really does seem to be the big new thing, and the willingness to give away other-platform versions is heartening to say the least. You can read more on the official site here. Those with the iOS version, make sure not to miss out on that free deal starting tomorrow.

OK, maybe he doesn’t do a lot of sneaking these days, but let’s forget that the last few years ever happened and rekindle buried memories of his days as a tranquil secret agent, his deft footsteps lighter than a snowflake as he clings to the shadows in a desperate attempt to remain incognito. And in the face of all those Georgian soldiers wielding assault rifles, attack dogs ready to munch away at his flopply-dopplies and those civilian tell-tales waiting to grass on him for looking at them funny, it’s pretty likely that he’d have jelly-wrestled his father-in-law for the ability to walk through walls.

Unending Zero, a stealth action game from a group of diligent students at The Art Institute of California, lets players do just that, extending a mirthful “Ha, ha!” in poor Sam’s general direction. The game’s protagonist, Martin Orfeo, holds a prodigious command of the infamous “no-clip” function, giving him the ability to pass through walls, disappear in the shadows and move freely within the confines of solid objects.

The drawback to these aberrant attributes? They accidentally killed his wife.

But let it not be said that recklessness doesn’t bear its consequences, and Unending Zero demonstrates this faith in the judiciary system by ensuring that Martin finds himself incarcerated in a military research facility, where he’s forced to engage in a series of scientific experiments à la Portal, only without the endearing voice of GlaDos tickling his ear drums. Naturally, though, pinning down a fellow who’s still capable of passing through walls isn’t exactly the most foolproof of schemes, and it’s thus up to the player to utilise Martin’s unique talents as a means of escaping the prison in which he finds himself.

More information on Unending Zero is available on its official website.

You may be interested in:

You know, I’m sure Sam Fisher’s job would have been immeasurably easier were he a possessor of ethereal characteristics.

What do we know about Gunpoint? Well, we know it’s a stealth platformer that boasts missions and upgrades and techno-jobbery. We know it comes from the mind of PC Gamer UK journo, Tom Francis. We’re also aware that it’s been helped along by a cascade of community collaboration: John Roberts and Fabian van Dommelen have provided the artistic content, a submission was picked for which sound should signify use of the game’s Crosslink device and now, through further competitioning, he’s chosen three soundtracks for Gunpoint’s varying states of play. You can check them all out via his blog, here, which will also helpfully afford you your daily jazz fix.

More importantly (for those of us who haven’t been hemorrhaging creativity) a decision has been made on the subject of pricing or, more accurately, whether or not to charge any money for the game at all. An online poll was constructed, votes were solemnly counted and the results are now in. In Francis’ own words:

I… asked you guys if you thought I should charge money for the game when it comes out. I was expecting around 90% of you to say I should keep it free, and if it was as low as 80% I’d start to believe it might be worth something. The figure was around 1%. Over a thousand comments, the vast majority of people said “No! Don’t give us a free thing! Charge us money!”

Unquestionably wonderful as this is (and it really is), I don’t find it entirely surprising. Given the popular press that the game has so far received and the goodwill usually exhibited amongst the indie community, folks around these parts are often inclined to admit when they should be paying good money for their video gaming. They also know when talent should rewarded.

Here’s hoping for a swift release and a game that plays as good as it looks. All we currently have is ‘probably March 2012′ for an initial PC version, but this is good enough for me.

We’ve been providing a fair bit of coverage on journo-turned-developer Tom Francis’ upcoming stealthy git simulator, Gunpoint, but sometimes it just takes a narrated walkthrough of a few levels to make the concept click. Fortunately, that’s exactly what we have here; After the break, eight and a half minutes of officially developer-sanctioned pushing people out of windows, rewiring lightswitches and improbably high-tech trousers.

This video raises a rather notable question, direct from the developer: Would you pay for this game? Personally, I’d buy it in a heartbeat if it launched for $5 or equivalent. While the quality of freeware games is creeping higher and higher (see the recent Stealth Bastard), there seems to be enough depth, subtlety and absurd humor here to extract some cash from my already anemic wallet, especially if it were to come with a level editor and some kind of level-sharing system.

There seems to be a lot of potential for variety and emergent gameplay presented, as the developer himself mentions – sometimes, he just stumbles onto alternative solutions to levels that he had never considered, despite designing them in the first place – it definitely puts the game a little more clearly on my radar. So, what do you think? Is the concept of diving face-first out of 5th floor plate windows in the name of hamfisted espionage enough to part you and your money? Let us – and Tom, ideally – know.
