Nowadays, though, while the game remains as cerebral and devilishly tactical as ever, its sterility lies in the absence of one key asset: violence.

Sumerian Blood: Gilgamesh Against The Gods, the brainchild of developers PompiPompi, hopes to remedy that which ails the ancient sport of chess by throwing that very factor into the melting pot. Set in a colourful mythological world, the game operates on a grid-based map, with opposing armies taking it in turns to outmanoeuvre their opponents and secure victory for either the army of An or the forces of the evil Gilgamesh. When two units land on the same square of the game board, they engage in a heated battle to the death that takes place in real-time, with each individual unit boasting its own unique set of abilities and deficiencies.

In essence, it’s a modern day rendition of Archon: The Light and the Dark, a similar blend of action and strategy originally released in the early 1980s on Atari 8-bit computers. Unlike its spiritual predecessor, however, Sumerian Blood supports the contemporary luxury of cross-platform play between PC and Android versions of the game, with additional versions potentially making their way over to other platforms if the gods be good. For lonesome gamers, there’s a fully fleshed single-player mode, whilst potential worlds conquerors can take to the net via the game’s online multiplayer component.

The Alpha version of Sumerian Blood: Gilgamesh Against the Gods can be purchased for $7.99, a 50% discount on the eventual release price, for both PC and Android through Indievania. Early buyers will get full access to each and every developer update as soon as it goes live and, to help things run smoothly, PompiPompi are open to suggestions for improvements on the game on its official IndieDB page.

You may be interested in:
