Chess is one of the most respected and enduring mind games in human history, and it was arguably the foundations on which many of our most beloved strategy video games were built. Nowadays, though, while the game remains as cerebral and devilishly tactical as ever, its sterility lies in the absence of one key asset: violence.

Sumerian Blood: Gilgamesh Against The Gods, the brainchild of developers PompiPompi, hopes to remedy that which ails the ancient sport of chess by throwing that very factor into the melting pot. Set in a colourful mythological world, the game operates on a grid-based map, with opposing armies taking it in turns to outmanoeuvre their opponents and secure victory for either the army of An or the forces of the evil Gilgamesh. When two units land on the same square of the game board, they engage in a heated battle to the death that takes place in real-time, with each individual unit boasting its own unique set of abilities and deficiencies.
