Whenever I mention the phrase “browser-based RPG” to a fellow gamer I can practically see their eyes rolling into the back of their head. For good reason too! In years past a number of browser-based RPGs have been released like the Legend of Zork which was panned for its heavy-handed micropayment structure.

So it really doesn’t come as a surprise when my fellow gamers react this way, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any decent browser based RPGs out there, case and point: Misfortune, by LoadinGames.

I haven’t gotten terribly far in the game yet, so I’ll hold back from reviewing the title. That said, what I have played is quite fun. It plays very similarly to the old CRPG series Might and Magic where you’d move tile by tile in a first person view discovering taverns, enemies, weapons and locations.

All of this is wrapped up in an impressive package of delightful music and artwork that really looks top notch and gives the game a very professional feel to it despite being made by three guys.

So if you’re looking for a legitimately good browser RPG to check out then give Misfortune a try. While it does have a micro-payment system from what I can tell so far it’s not set up in such a way as to be terribly intruding or mandatory in order to progress.
