Cell phones are a huge market for indie developers, especially now that damn near every one of them has it’s own individual app store. Obviously, the iPhone is the one platform that instantly springs to mind when developing new titles. It does have a bigger audience, after all. But, believe it or not, the Android is fast becoming a viable platform for indie developers as well, even if they give their game away for free.

We decided to put the Android marketplace to the test and see what, if any, of the games were actually good. Lo and behold we came back with five games that weren’t only good, but actually blew us away with how much fun they could be. Enjoy!

1. Abduction!

Abduction! is by and far the best game on Android. I don’t care if there is a damn-near perfect Halo clone on the platform, it won’t ooze with the same style and playfulness that Abduction! does. Developed by Phil Symonds in his spare time, the game is really just a simple platform/arcade game where you continually auto-jump up and have to utilize the phone’s accelerometer in order to control your character. It’s a simple format and certainly not new, but Abduction! does it with style, nuance, and character.

The point of the game is fairly simple, you play as a cow attempting to continually jump up and onto various platforms in order to reach the UFO at the top which has abducted all your farm buddies. While it may sound like a simplistic and easy game, it’s anything but. Abduction! is very challenging and because of that also rewarding. You’ll be sure to play this one again and again… and again. Go download it now.

Oh and for those who want a full-fledged adventure mode complete with different worlds, you can buy the game for little over $2. Definitely. Worth. It.

2. Labyrinth Lite

I’m sure any avid Android gamer knew this one was coming. Labyrinth Lite was the first Android game to not only really utilize the accelerometer but also supply haptic feedback. The idea behind the game is for you to get your ball through a maze to the end-point. The only thing stopping you from getting there is a bunch of holes in the ground. The game is very addictive and can be extremely challenging… sometimes it’s just plain ol’ luck.

The game comes with 10 levels, which may seem small until you realize that the game comes with a full-blown level editor for you to create your own. For a free game, that’s a huge plus as the developer, Illusion Labs, certainly didn’t have to include that into the free version, but rather put it into the paid version which still has yet to see a release date.

3. Crystallight Free

Crystallight Free is a great tower defense game. Not because it revolutionizes the genre and certainly not because it has the most immersive gameplay of any tower defense game I’ve ever played. No, what makes it so good is the fresh artwork and style behind the game, the presentation, at it were. Crystallight Free is a great tower defense game, there’s no denying that, but few feel this good and have an interesting story behind it.

Oh and there’s a paid version to which provides even more features, levels, and basically all he good stuff you’d associate with the game.

4. Cestos Full

Cestos is an interesting game and it may sound simple while I’m describing it to you but, really, you gotta try it to fully comprehend how good it is. In Cestos the idea is to be the last one standing. You have marbles that you can control the direction and speed of and so does your opponent(s). It’s up to you to try and push their marbles into the hole and be the last one left alive. Oh and one quick, small, tiny detail I forgot to mention; this game is 100% online. That’s right, you won’t be playing against some easy-peasy computer player, your going to be playing against other people. That, in and of itself, is damned impressive for a mobile game.

Anyways the game is completely free so what you get in the download is what you’ll always have. No pay version lording over you with extra features and fun. Hooray!

5. Shot

Shot is a very simple game, in theory anyways. The game has 978 levels(!) and in each your tasked with removing them all, except for one, by bumping them out with another ball. Sounds fairly simple right? That’s what I thought right up until the point where you have about 8 balls on the screen. The game is all about plotting ahead and figuring out your moves before you actually make it (like Chess). If you even miss even a single move that you were supposed to make, you’ll have to reset the level.

This may sound tedious, but in reality, it ‘s actually makes the game fun. Each level is a completely new puzzle wrapped around the same dynamics. Which means the game can easily be played for 2-3 minutes while waiting for the bus or be played for longer stretches when your bored.

So that’s it. Our list of the top five indie games on Android. I’ve been a long-time Android user (since it’s launch) and I’ve seen the games that came before these and after these and, by and large, these would be the best of the best. Please note, that this is our opinion and that your’s can certainly differ from our own.
