IGM Let’s Try- ‘Cry of Fear’

Cry of Fear is a psychological single-player and co-op horror game set in a deserted town filled with horrific creatures and nightmarish delusions.

Cry of Fear originally started out as a Half-Life modification, set in the same vein as the classic survival horror games of old. Four years in the making and picking up several modding awards on the way, it is now a free standalone game for anyone to enjoy.

A Strong Start For ‘Dog Sled Saga’

Dan Fitzgerald and Lisa Bromiel are the latest indie developers to try their hand at crowdfunding, having launched their Kickstarter campaign for Dog Sled Saga a few days ago. We covered the game previously, and took a great deal of interest in the game’s approach to the under-represented sport of dog-sledding. Evidently, this interest has been echoed by the wider public too; at the time of writing Dog Sled Saga stands at $4,149, with 25 days to go. If the positive trend continues, this should be more than ample time for the campaign to hit its $6,000 goal. As well as this, Dan and Lisa’s campaign has been featured on the Kickstarter “Staff Picks” list, which gives a great deal of exposure and is a boon to anyone hoping for Kickstarter success.  A very impressive start for the pair.

‘March of War’ Enters Closed Beta

marchofwar

After the success of their previous titles in the well-received Iron Grip universe, ISOTX has moved out of their elaborately created universe to make space for a new one in March of War. March of War is a free-to-play turn-based strategy set in an alternate universe during World War II. March of War calls itself dieselpunk, so expect some twists you wouldn’t normally see in a 1940s strategy game.

One of the most interesting aspects of ISOTX’s description of their cross-platform game is how the story will work in the game’s universe. The tagline goes “rewrite the twentieth century – join forces in March of War.” There is a lot of potential in this, and I am curious about how it will all come together with the game’s optional pay-to-play system. Playing games will earn the player gold and research points, but the player can “speed up some of the game elements” by using real world money to buy gems in the game.

Do you think this sort of system encourages a form of ‘cheating’ by letting players speed up, or even bypass the more tedious moments of the game? Or in a social game does this make things easier for those who do not have time to invest? Let us know in the forum thread here!

If you want to see the game in action, why not sign up for the recently released beta? All you need to do is sign up on the March of War website, and you are all set.

Indie Intermission – ‘They Came From The Sea’ A Great Little Arcade Game

They Came From The Sea ss01

They Came From The Sea is a well put together mini game that reminds me greatly of the early Nintendo Gameboy games such as Pokemon and Zelda.

This game however has you protecting a bunch of eggs from strange creatures that are coming from the sea, with your only task to prevent the eggs getting eaten by these creatures.

The game starts out quite easy with you just having to protect the eggs from a few of these sea creatures. However it is not long before you must protect the eggs from all manner of creatures that are coming from the sea.

The game mechanics are quite simple as you just have the arrow keys, space, and S which give you all the utility you need to defend these eggs. Space will use your sword to slash at these creatures and help you protect the eggs from these sea creatures, but don’t let them get too close or else your HP will take a beating.

They Came From The Sea ss02

Average play time – 10 minutes

They Came From The Sea is a fantastically simple game with some great retro graphics and great music. Everything comes together well in this  fantastic little arcade game.

They Came From The Sea was created by Omaromeir and can be played now on Newgrounds.

Indie Intermission – ‘Papers, Please’ Is There A Game For Everything?

papers, please ss03

When video games first came around we saw games that allowed you to battle the beasts of hell, race F1 cars, and explore far flung worlds. Basically if you could imagine it A game would come to cover you.

With all these wild fantastic ideas you would never expect developers to create games about working in retail (Cart Life) or other mundane ventures, however Lucas Pope has created the latest simulator to simulate the life of a border control agent during the 1980s.

Papers, Please is a dark insight into the life of a border control agent for an imaginary eastern block country during the cold war era. Papers, Please is equal parts mundane as it is brilliant as you set out to complete ever more complex and comprehensive checks on people moving over the border working to the time constraints set in place by the working day.

Papers, Please is such a dark and depressing insight that it gives this game such gravity it is impossible to resist the call of this mundane lifestyle.

papers, please ss01

Average play time – About an hour

Papers, Please is currently still in beta although if the current beta is anything to go by I am sure the finished game will be a dark and moving insight into humanities struggle to provide for their family.

Be sure to check out Papers, Please and find out just why the mundane is so magnificent. Papers, Please can be downloaded via Lucas Pope’s Site.

Indie Intermission – ‘Bat Country’ Giant Mutant Bats Can Put A Damper On Your Day

Bat Country ss02

This week seem to of mostly focused on the rather simplistic pixelart arcade games and today fits into this idea rather nicely. Bat Country by Greg Sergeant is a point and click helicopter shooter that is almost entirely mouse controlled and contains a rather interesting running narrative and bats… lots and lots of bats.

In Bat Country you take control of a helicopter and must make it through the four levels whilst avoiding the rather large and sinister looking bats that keep flying at you in an attempt (I assume) to clog up your rotary blades with bat entrails.

The game follows some very basic pixelart style with rather standard simplistic backgrounds, but everything comes together rather nicely to give Bat Country a genuinely retro arcade feel that is just brilliant, showing that sometimes the best ideas are the simplest.

Bat Country ss03

Average play time – 20 minutes

Bat Country is an intensely challenging game that throws everything it can at you from start to finish. Unrelenting yes, but the game does contain a suitable amount of variety and story that you are compelled to play through the levels and exterminate all these massive bats.

Bat Country can be played online on Greg Segeant’s site.

Indie Intermission – ‘Atomic’ A Minimalistic Fast Paced Arcade Game

Atomic ss01

Today’s game is Atomic from Amidos, a developer I have followed quite closely over the past few months due to his great innovation and ever interesting games that have largely came out of different game jams.

Atomic is a very interesting yet simple concept for a game which only requires you to use the space bar for all the actions. Following a very minimalistic approach, in Atomic you appear to be an electron orbiting a nucleus and must increase your orbit to collect squares whilst trying to avoid the bullets.

It really is a very elegant game that plays fantastically and it should not take you long to realise just where the influences come from. The whole style is very reminiscent of Super Hexagon which is great in my opinion as Super Hexagon is such a fantastic game.

Although the basic idea is simple mastering the game can be very difficult leading to a lot of fun and frustrating moments as you try to beat your last score.

Atomic ss02

Average play time – 5 minutes

Atomic is a nice and relaxing time waster that offers a lot of challenge whilst not being too unforgiving. With great visuals and awesome music expect to get a great deal of fun out of Atomic.

Be sure to play Atomic on Newgrounds now. Also be sure to check out Amidos’ site for more games and info.

Indie Intermission Sunday Round Up: Beat Em Up And Blast Off

Indie-Intermission-the-daily-grind

Welcome to another weekly roundup of free games. This post will collect together all the free games I have been playing over the course of the week into one nice tidy place to complete you Sunday. So if you managed to miss any of these over the week give them a go now as after all it is Sunday.

As always clicking the title will take you to my original article whilst clicking the image will take you to the game enjoy!

Monday: ’Archeblade’ Not Your Average Beat Em Up

Archeblade screenshot 17

For all who are fans of beat em ups and online gaming Archeblade is truly the game for you. Combining fast paced combo oriented gameplay with multiplayer battling Archeblade is simply brimming with style and the best part is it is totally free so check it out.

Tuesday:  ’Cart Life’ Another Day Another Dollar

cart life ss02

The critically acclaimed retail simulator Cart Life is a must for all fans of RPGs. The free version has a great deal of gameplay allowing you to play through as one of the vendors on his unique journey to make his way in the USA. Very well constructed game overall with a great story that will keep you busy for hours, retail has never been so much fun.

Wednesday:  ’Encounter’ A Close Encounter Of The RPG Kind

encounter ss02

A beautifully simple but extremely elegant game Encounter focuses the gameplay solely around the turn based battles found in old school RPGs but with its own twist. In a kind of Connect Four manner you must try to achieve the best line of combos and beat all the monsters.

Thursday: ’Animal Blast’ Strap In And Blast Off

Animal blast ss02

A rather strange concept maybe but with such a creative story behind the game Animal Blast is all kinds of silly. Even Though the story is rather ridiculous the gameplay is somewhat taxing and quickly ramps up in difficulty as you must navigate these hostile levels whilst collecting as much fruit as you can. A great concept executed rather well, that provides a great deal of fun throughout.

Friday: ’OCD Gnome’ Into The Mind Of A Gnome

OCD Gnome splash

The name alone really did sell me on this one but alongside that the narrative is fantastic. OCD Gnome is a puzzler in which you play a gnome who has to arrange every area in a manner that he sees fit. It really is a rather great concept for a puzzle game and with more time spent on it I am sure this game could be fleshed out into a rather fantastically fun game.

 ——

I hope you have enjoyed this weeks pick of free indie titles and hope you have had a great deal of fun playing through them over the week or today. Be sure to return to The Indie Game Magazine tomorrow for a brand new Indie Intermission, but until then have a great Sunday.
