Todays game is yet another melancholy title that follows the characters life from birth to death in a very creative platforming style. And Everything Started To Fall was created by Alexitron and Heatex, as it aims to show life through a small very short window mirroring life.

And Everything Started To Fall really is a very emotive and emotional journey that you take with this character as he has to jump over hurdles in his life. As you progress further on you will start to be put up against an array of ever more difficult platforming events which you must try to overcome, but to what end.

The reward in the game is somewhat unconventional and is actually quite easy to guess just by looking at the theme of the game, as death is inevitable here.

Average play time – 5 minutes

And Everything Started To Fall is a short but sweet game that casts a light inwardly on to all who play it as it tries to highlight a lifetime of achievements and experiences into just a few minutes, which actually helps to put life into perspective.

Now here’s a paradox – an overwhelmingly atmospheric game set on the moon? Likelier than you think. We’ve covered Routine (from the fittingly named Lunar Software) a couple of times before, but now it’s really shaping up to be something special. A semi-roguelike-esque first person horror/exploration game. You’ve got one life, an uncertain environment around you, and a mission to discover why a moon-base has gone silent. Here’s some appropriately intense new footage:

And let this be a lesson to you: Gunfights in space are a very bad idea, even worse than gunfights on Earth. I’m digging what I’m seeing so far – what looks to be a rather more serious ‘hard’ sci-fi setting. No outlandish monsters, although some rather imposing robots and guys with guns. The game promises to be a more tactile experience than most, with Deadzone aiming (think along the lines of Red Orchestra or Arma) and little to no HUD. No health points, either. Injury is going to be handled more realistically here, too. Oh, and as mentioned, you’ve got one life. Death resets everything, and things might play out very differently next time round.

There’s no fixed release date yet for Routine, although the developers have ballparked it for 2013. Keep an eye on IGM for more big reveals as they happen, as well as the official site for the game.

It may not be the most friendly game out there, but what experiment is intended to be such? Not many. POP‘s minigames are erratic at best and linked together with bizarre videos to further disjoint the ride.

POP is on sale now at a recommended price of $4.99/ €4.99/ £3.99 but you can pay whatever you want for the game, with the minimum being $1 which will also bag you the game’s soundtrack. The more you pay the more goodies you get including a t-shirt, stickers and if you pay $250 and up and you’ll receive all of Rob’s games from now and forever. Head over to the game’s website and navigate the very interesting layout to find the store.

More information on POP: Methodology Experiment 1 can be found on the game’s official website.

You may be interested in:

Rob Lach’s first foray into what will become a mini-series of experimental games, POP: Methodology Experiment 1 (POP), has been released as a pay-what-you-want title for PC and Mac.

Stretched across seven vignettes or minigames that are were shaped initially by music, with the game design being melded around that, POP is without a doubt an interesting experience.

Now, after all of this time, it reappears and the developers, Giant Sparrow, have gone the thatgamecompany route with a PSN exclusive deal.

For some reason, upon finding out this news my gut reaction was to scream “NOOOOO” at the top of my lungs. For instance, just read this quote from the developer:

“Sony calls it an “incubation deal.” In addition to giving us funding they also provide office space, equipment and advice (often in the form of this cheerful graphics programmer from the God of War team).

Kejero has finished his small “adaptive music” project he calls Kameleon, which is actually a rather fun game as well as being a form of tech demo.

We’re going to resist mentioning Boy George (failed already) with this post about a game called Kameleon – it’s bad enough with that accursed song being stuck in our heads already, without inflicting it upon our readers! Some of you may have heard of Kameleon before as it’s made it’s way around the block already. However, the latest version of the game is being deemed the definitive edition – the one that its developer, Kejero, is most happy with releasing to the public.

So what is Kameleon? Well, it’s a free game made it Flash but it does serve a higher purpose. Kejero composes music for both films and games and has a passion for “adaptive music”. It shouldn’t take a genius to work out what he means by that, but just in case, this is music that dynamically alters itself so as to best fit its source. In other words, it’s not dictated by a sheet of music and fixed – it’s a fluid work and something that should really come hand-in-hand with computer games if you think about it.

A lot of people (well, a few) were starting to talk about adaptive music in games a few years ago but it still hasn’t really taken off. It’s probably noteworthy in a few games but it’s not something anyone can really cite (we’re tempted to say Journey has an adaptive soundtrack in a way, but Kameleon is on a slightly different scale).

This was about the time that Kejero decided to start work on Kameleon (yes it’s been a while) and finally, after months of playtesting and feedback, he has released the version he is most happy with.

So, without further ado, you can play Kameleon and check out its adaptive music flows over on the official website. The developer notes that as the music is streamed as you play, some people might incur some lag, in which case there is a download link.

Things were looking up late last year for the Wiiware port of Nigoro‘s classic PC platform/adventure/puzzle/exploration game La-Mulana, but things fell apart at the 11th hour as issues were discovered, and Nintendo rejected the submitted version. It’s been a few months, but the developers seem confident that they’ve got the kinks worked out. In a recent development blog post, they proudly proclaim ‘We will finish soon!’.

For those unlucky few who haven’t played the original version, you can find it here, translated from Japanese by Aeon Genesis. The PC version, widely considered to be an indie classic, is an enormous puzzle-centric action/platformer set in an enormous maze of ancient ruins and tunnels, done in deliberately retro 8-Bit MSX style. Huge levels, tough combat, and complex Myst-esque puzzles put the average players completion time over 25 hours.

The Wii remake looks to be leaping forward a few hardware generations, skipping 16-bit era entirely and landing on early 32-bit 2D style, much akin to Castlevania: Symphony of The Night. It’s a full remake as opposed to a direct port, and large chunks are being redesigned and rebalanced so that new players should have a smoother ride. Localization and international publishing on the Wii version are being handled by Nicalis, who oversaw the worldwide commercial release of Cave Story.

To celebrate their newfound confidence in the version to be submitted, Nigoro have released a fresh screenshot gallery showing off several of the updated ‘main’ bosses in their full genre-bending glory. Having seen some of these in action already via trailers and livestreams, I’m glad to say that they’re a massive improvement over the slightly awkward, 8-bit sprites of the original release.

There’s also a developer livestream set for at 22:00 PST, February 27th. Unfortunately a little early for me (7am on the 28th), but well worth a look for those who’ll be up at that hour. See the dev-blog post linked above for details.

Why does it always have to be snakes? The first boss gets a stylish makeover.

With the new version of the game looking so polished, my only concern now is whether the game will sell enough to break even given the extended development cycle. The Wii has been something of a waning star so far this year, with essential releases being few and far between. Wiiware sales likely aren’t at their best, either. I wish Nigoro all the luck in the world, and will be buying it the moment that Nintendo Europe allow me to give them money for this game. Bring on the temples.
