They’re probably right. Well, most of the time, anyway.

But falling submissively in line with such a trend isn’t the MO of Day One, an exciting new interactive video gaming concept from French developers Wild Game Studio.

Sketchy though the details of the project may be, the aura of mystery surrounding Day One is undoubtedly part of its marketing allure. Running with a fervent penchant for community brainstorming, the developers have decided to open up each section of the game, set for an episodic release structure, to the gaming community. What that means in more specific terms is that players will be allowed to pitch storyline concepts to the development team, with the best received ideas eventually working manifesting themselves as focal plot devices in future episodes. The first episode, entitled Garry’s Incident, will centre around the game’s protagonist, Garry Friedman, a 40-year-old chap who’s recently had to suffer through the anguish of losing his family as a result of a grave accident. Now entrenched in an alcoholic stupor, Friedman has found himself the victim of another mishap, this time involving a plane crash that leaves him stranded in the Amazon Rainforest.

After the first episode draws to a close, it’s up to the fans as to what happens next. Does Garry summon a hitherto unknown fit of rage-induced spirit and fend off an entire invading army of Argentine yoga instructors? Does he rekindle a past fling with Harry, the devious sock puppet he’s been carrying around with him since a fateful altercation with a travelling Punch & Judy showman? The choice is yours.

Day One: Garry’s Incident won’t be released until September, but that’s no reason not to keep tabs on its progress.
