Wow, I’m impressed. I just got finished watching a 12-ish minute long gameplay tour of Castle Story and it could, quite possibly, be an early contender for Indie Game of the Year in 2012. It has that perfect combinations of great looks with gameplay that, on initial inspection, looks to borrow some key ideas from mega-popular indie game Dwarf Fortress.

Now, at the moment, the comparisons might be a little unfair. I meant no disrespect to the Dwarf Fortress fans out there. It’s just that, after a while, those ASCII graphics wear you down. Castle Story, on the other hand, is very colorful, vivid, and all around just pretty. But where the comparisons do come in is, what seems to be the overlying gameplay aspect of both games: essentially you’re controlling a group of guys who will build and maintain your lands. Granted, we don’t yet know the exact extent to which you can control the Bricktrons in Castle Story.

In any case, the idea in Castle Story is similar. You start out with a few Bricktrons (dwarves) and it’s your job to stockpile resources and get the little buggers to build a castle to defend themselves from all manners of baddies.

Also of note is that the game is made entirely out of voxels, per the video, which means that mining and destructible environments are possible. This should also appease many Minecraft fans out there who love the feel of playing with blocks but are looking for something a little different.

We don’t know when Castle Story will be released, nor do we know if it will even cost money. The game’s site is still a little barren. Regardless, we’ll be keeping a close eye on this one as it matures.
