This one is for all of you who played the classic side scrollers back in the 80-90s as Maldita Castilla aims to bring back what made this decade of gaming great. Along with awesome visuals expect compelling gameplay that really does throw back to the golden age of gaming.

Thursday: ’Bat Country’ Giant Mutant Bats Can Put A Damper On Your Day

Who would’ve thought that a helicopter could get taken down by a swarm of giant bats? Although this may sound implausible it does end in some rather interesting results. Bat Country is all about the old style arcade flight games with strange stories and a distinct pixel art style that although rather simplistic is also elegant.

Friday: ’Endless Forms Most Beautiful’ A Beautifully Recreated Spectrum Game

Endless Forms Most Beautiful is a PC port of the original Spectrum game and thus feeds into the retro vibe of the week. Each level consists of just one screen in which you must pick up all of the mushrooms before the enemy get you. Although the idea is simple actually obtaining all of the mushrooms can be very challenging especially on the later levels when ranged enemies get introduced.

——

This brings us to the end of another week in indie gaming. I hope you have all enjoyed the games that I have selected this week. Please come back tomorrow for an all new game and the start of a new week of Indie Intermission.

If you are a developer with A fun indie game that can be played over a coffee break, we want to hear from you! Private message us on twitter @IndieGameMag or shoot us an email at editors@indiegamemag.com with the subject “Indie Intermission” and you could be our indie intermission pick of the day!

Oh what a lovely coincidence that we’re being made doubly sweaty then – firstly by the weather being too hot already, and secondly by the encroaching release of not one but two promising indie games taking part in this promotion. Those would be 5th Cell’s parkour-induced online shooter Hybrid and Humble Hearts’ animated brawler jaw dropper Dust: An Elysian Tail.

The announcement came from Major Nelson in which it was stated that the two indie titles would be last to be released under the Summer of Arcade promotion – clearly leaving the best to last. As such, Hybrid will be release on Xbox LIVE Arcade on August 8th with Dust: An Elysian Tail following a week later on August 15th. So, if you haven’t already, go and grab it from Freebird’s website right now! There’s a free one hour demo too if you just want a peek. At the moment, To The Moon will only be available for Windows during its Steam launch but Kan did say that he’s looking for a way to bring to to Mac as well.

Hopefully this will make Kan plenty of money so that he can put it towards the next entry in the series. There’s no details on a release date for To The Moon on Steam as of yet but we’ll make sure to keep you posted as soon as we hear any.

One thing we will say about SWAP is that it seems a lot more fast-paced that those other two puzzle games and that probably stems from the game’s story.

In SWAP, you are taken to a facility as a baby in order to be trained as an elite soldier. There’s no weapon training though, instead you are tasked with surveying and manipulating the environment to your will and as quickly as possible. Your main task in this latest exercise is to prevent a nuclear explosion in what was apparently Alaska but has since been taken over a government faction – yes we’re in the future here.

There’s much more to the story but it seems that will be explored in the following titles after SWAP as this is planned to be a “saga”. Basically, you’re following the evolution of this person from training to eventually saving the world. The gameplay looks as if it will keep us busy most importantly, as we attempt to figure our way through the levels at a fast pace. You can get the gist of the game from the level montage below, which has some pretty decent music attached to it too. Enjoy!

You can find out more information on SWAP over on the game’s IndieDB page.

You may be interested in:

Vurb are working on a white-washed, first-person puzzle game called SWAP that we think is worth taking a look at, especially if you’re a fan of the genre.

The white cubes scattered around SWAP are instantly going to make you think either Portal or Q.U.B.E, to be fair that’s not far off what the game is like.
