Tale of Tales’ Pay-What-You-Want Tri-Fecta

dayofthedead

As indicated by Tale of Tales’ own press release, it really is ironic how joyous of an occasion Halloween has become. I suppose this is especially true for the more ghoulish developers such as Tale of Tales themselves, who are celebrating the “Day of the Dead” by offering a bundle of three fantastic games, The Graveyard, The Path, and Fatale at a price buyers choose themselves. All proceeds will then go towards Tale of Tales’ upcoming title, The Book of 8.

The sale, which is going on until November 2nd, requires a minimum of $3 (a downright steal, honestly) and the developers have promised a “special surprise” for those who donate $50 or more. Halloween sure is turning out to be fun for us!

The Path Wins Big at hóPLAY Bilbao, 50% Off Sale

The_Path_Wins

Progressive indie developer Tale of Tales has passed along word that their adventure horror game The Path has netted the dev a pair of awards at Bilbao, Spain’s hóPLAY International Video Game Festival.

Grabbing two of the six awards available–Best Sound and Best Design–The Path earned €6,000 for each, totaling around $16,000 US in prize money. Despite numerous nominations, this actually marks the first time in Tale of Tales history to take home some winning hardware.

To celebrate, the developer has dropped the price of their title down to just $5 through Sunday, October 3. The game offers an eerie experience as a dark re-imagining of the Little Red Riding Hood fairytale and at half price is a great pick-up for those looking for something totally different.

Congrats to the developer on the recognition!

Tale of Tales Celebrates Studio History with Discounts, ‘Vanitas’ for Free

The_Path_GoreyExperimental/art game masters Tale of Tales released The Path exactly one year ago on the eve of the Game Developers Conference. Designers Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn launched the game from the same hotel that they had met in 10 years prior. In celebration of the indie developers’ accomplishments, they have decided to make us–the gamers–victors by offering all of their titles at discounted prices. Also, Tale of Tales will release special behind-the-scenes footage, announcements regarding The Path, and even the hotly anticipated soundtrack album from Jarboe and Kris Force.

Until Sunday, March 28, there will be a 50% discount sale on all of Tale of Tales’ titles. The Path will be $5 for PC or Mac. The Graveyard will be at $2.50 for PC or Mac but only $1 for the iPhone, and Fatale for PC or Mac is only $3.50. For iPhone/iPod Touch owners, the most recent Vanitas is available for free on the App Store [until March 28].

Check out their official website and the press release below for more info.

“It will be a festive week! The Path was our biggest production ever. It took 3 years to make it, and lots of blood, sweat and tears. And money. All of this will be revealed in the postmortem. This is a double anniversary for us, since we launched The Path on the 10th anniversary of our collaboration. We’ve been working together for 11 years now, but it feels like we’ve only just started.”

Press Release:

One year on The Path

Tale of Tales celebrates first anniversary of indie horror title The Path

Gent, Belgium, 18 March 2010

One year ago, on the eve of the Game Developers Conference, The Path was launched from a bed in a room in a hotel in San Francisco. The same hotel where designers Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn first met, exactly 10 years before. Since then, The Path has gone on to become one of the most divisive titles in the history of independent games. Lauded as a milestone in the artistic development of the medium by some and trashed as an insult to the very nature of games by others, The Path left no-one untouched. Today, Tale of Tales celebrates its anniversary with discounts on all their products and a special limited USB edition of The Path.

Over the course of the week, an elaborate postmortem will be released, behind-the-scenes images will be revealed, and several announcements are expected about translations of the Path and the highly anticipated soundtrack album by Jarboe and Kris Force. For the occasion, Tale of Tales multiplayer screensaver The Endless Forest will be cast in mist.

Keep an eye on the Tale of Tales blog for news.

“It will be a festive week!” exclaim Tale of Tales owners Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn. “The Path was our biggest production ever.

For the next 10 days, all of Tale of Tales’ titles will be available at a 50% discount. The Path for PC or Mac now costs 5 US Dollars, The Graveyard for PC or Mac $2.5, The Graveyard for iPhone $1 and Fatale for PC or Mac is available for $3.5. One of the early collaborative projects of the couple, The Godlove Museum, for PC or Mac, can be yours for $10.

And Tale of Tales’ latest creation, Vanitas for iPhone, is available free of charge until Sunday March 28.

The Path is inspired by the fairy tale of Little Red Ridinghood. Six sisters are instructed, one by one, to visit their grandmother who lives at the end of a long path that runs straight through the forest. The forest looms dark and foreboding. But the girls are strangely attracted to it as well. Before long they disobey their mother and set out to explore the misty woods. A journey that ends abruptly when each girl meets her wolf…

The Path is a psychological thriller about growing and growing up, about unfulfilled desire, about control and the lack thereof, about the relativity of freedom, and about eternal innocence. An explicit story is not told in The Path. Instead the scene is set for the player to explore and interpret as they play. In the end, The Path is about you, and about those things you’d prefer to keep hidden from yourself. This can be profoundly meaningful for some, and deeply disturbing for others.

The Path was created by Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn with the help of Jarboe and Kris Force (music), Laura Raines Smith (character animations), Hans Zantman (technical art) and Marian Bantjes (logo and calligraphy). Production of The Path was supported by Creative Capital, the Flemish Authorities, Flanders Audiovisual Fund, Design Flanders, CultuurInvest and Villanella.

Tale of Tales Translate ‘The Path’ Via Free Patch Update

The_Path_GoreyTale of Tales is known to bring about some beautifully obscure titles. With the help of many volunteers, their horror title–The Path–has been translated into 8 languages (Danish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish) in addition to the two that had already come at the game’s release (English and Dutch) and its recent retail releases in Polish and Russian. This means the free update has made the game playable in 12 total languages. However, the updates will not stop there as there is promise of the game’s translation into Arabic, Czech, Japanese and Korean coming soon. For those who already own The Path, simply download the patch at this location.

However, for those of us that do not, the game can be purchased for $9.99 at this location. Tale of Tales reveals that the short horror game was inspired by the Little Red Ridinghood. Available for both PC and Mac, indie fans should easily be able to embrace this title.

For a look at what the game is like, read on for the trailer.

Fatale Now Available on Steam

FATALEValve continues its trend of signing on buzz worthy indie titles for Steam, as today brings the announcement that Tale of Tales’ experimental interactive vignette FATALE has been released onto the digital distribution mega-hub.

The realtime 3D event is inspired by the story of Salome. I’d love to tell you more about it but that’s for you to experience, if you wish. Wouldn’t want to ruin the whole purpose of the thing, and neither would the developer. You see, Tale of Tales aren’t your regular garden variety devs. They burst onto the scene earlier this year with the dark, introspective and controversial horror title The Path. Controversial as in whether or not the game was, well actually a game. Most who support the title do so because of the originality and the complete disregard of standardized guidelines for games in favor of something completely outside of the box. Woah.

Video game or not, the developer’s work certainly is an experience, perhaps even a profound one. FATALE runs $7 and is available now.
