Treadmill Combat: Serious Sam The Random Encounter [Review]

Vlambeer is building their name upon solid gameplay. Title after title they continue to come up with addictive mechanics that players can dive into again and again without things getting repetitive. It’s kind of their thing. So it was exciting to hear that, along with other notable devs Mommy’s Best Games and Be-Rad Entertainment, the developer would be taking part in a Serious Sam 3 indie games promo. Thus getting a chance to weave their magic into an already enjoyable franchise by creating Serious Sam: The Random Encounter.

Now their effort is out on Steam ($5) for everyone to purchase and play. So how is it? A variety of feelings come to mind after playing through, and (like the game’s familiar enemies) the whole lot happen to slam into me simultaneously.

A Very Serious Take On the JRPG, Serious Sam: The Random Encounter Out Today

Heads up! We’ve got another Serious Sam indie game landing today! This time it comes from developers Vlambeer, better known as the games who created the amazing Super Crate Box. If you haven’t played that one, I highly recommend checking it out.

Anyway, so Vlambeer made a JRPG based around the (in)famous Serious Sam FPS franchise and, you know what, it looks pretty damn awesome! Here’s the game in Vlambeer’s own words:

Serious Sam: The Random Encounter is Vlambeer’s take on the traditional JRPG . Admittedly, we don’t have a clue about JRPGs. Seems like we ended up with a game about running backwards and shooting hundreds of enemies in the face with heavy weaponry. Explosions.

Vlambeer Shows Screens of Serious Sam: The Random Encounter

Serious Sam has a third game coming. To hype up the game, Devolver Digital round up some of the best of the indie biz to release three different spins on the franchise. DIY covered Mommy’s Best Games interpretation from PAX East, Serious Sam Double D, as well as Be-Rad Entertianment’s Serious Sam Kamikaze Attack.

Vlambeer, maker of IGF 2011 finalist Super Crate Box, has succumb to E3 peer pressure or just possibly is following the footsteps of other industry notables and has finally leaked some images of the final Serious Sam indie title. Vlambeer’s turn-based RPG is called Serious Sam: The Random Encounter. A recent blog post reveals some details of the gameplay as it is now; a companion to Sam carries a large cannon “which takes a turn to charge but kills a giant load of enemies when it’s actually fired.” Imagine the effect on the screen below, which looks like a traditional turn-based battle screen, with a crap ton of enemies.

Vlambeer also revealed some details about the game’s locations, where Sam will “combat Mentals’ hordes, including deserts, pyramids, temples, underwater dungeons and spaceships.” Gamers had a chance to test the Serious Sam: The Random Encounter in the Netherlands event Indigo and provided feedback to Vlambeer.

I contacted Vlambeer to see if The Random Encounter will make an E3 appearance, and I will update the post when I find out. What do you think of these screenshots? What platform do you hope Vlambeer will release this title on?
