Quirky Xbox Live Soccer game, SFG Soccer, finally hits the PC

SFGSoccerPC000SFG Soccer, a quirky soccer game that landed on Microsoft’s XBLIG channel late last year, has, finally, made the promised PC port available just in time for the world largest sporting event, the World Cup. Coincidence? I think not!

For those who have yet to hear anything about this game (XBLIG version or otherwise) it’s a simplistic soccer game that is actually a lot of fun. You can play as one of 64  nations (although not with real names as the game has no licenses). The games are only 6 v. 6, so it’s not a realistic sim like FIFA is, but it is a fun little jaunt through a game of footie, if that’s all your interested in.

In addition, it would seem the PC version ships with a few extras like:

1. Mouse controls and a two-button casual mode for those who just want to get in and play some footie.
2. Customizable teams and leagues.
3. Multi-season career mode, featuring 64 national teams.

Based on my experiences with the XBLIG version I can attest to the game being a fun little footie game. My only problem with the XBLIG version was it’s 400 point price, honestly I just wasn’t interested at that point, which probably has more to do with my expectations of the XBLIG channel than the actual game itself.

Unfortunately, at 5.99 GBP ($8.80) that means the price is even higher for the PC version. Is it worth it? While I can’t say for certain I’d wager whether you’re a hardcore or casual fan of the game would be the deciding factor. More hardcore fans would probably be interested in EA’s newly released FIFA World Cup, but more casual fans, not wanting to drop $60, could probably find just as much enjoyment our of SFG Soccer: Football Fever.

Xbox Live Indie SFG Soccer Hits PC

SFG_Soccer_PCStir Fry Games arcade sports game SFG Soccer has been well received as an Xbox Live Indie title, so well in fact that the indie dev has announced the release of the game onto PC. The game has been featured in the top rated and top downloaded sections of the indie marketplace. Gaining a 4 star rating in the US and a 4.5 in the UK.

The game features an extensive multi-season 64-team career mode that includes custom team & player editors, playoffs and a skill improvement system. The PC version also includes new features requested by the community including individual stats, higher difficulty settings, league leaders, and the ability to edit and share your league using external programs like Microsoft Excel.

The game is available now via the developer’s website, but I should point out that currently the Xbox 360 version costs less than half of what the new PC version is being offered at.

DIY Spotlight: Footie for Cheap! SFG Soccer

SFG SoccerIf your a fan of the beautiful game you have plenty of choices to get your soccer fix in the world of video games. FIFA 10 and ProEvo 2010 immediately spring to mind. But what if you don’t care for all the glitz and glamor and would rather just play a quick game of footie for as cheap as possible? Well then I’ve got some good news for you…

SFG Soccer was recently released to the Xbox Live Indie Games platform. While some may look at it’s cartoony graphics and be immediately put off by it, others who just want to play a quick game here and there with a friend will probably find what they are looking for in SFG Soccer. Plus there are a number of immediate advantages to SFG over the big games like the fact that it’s only $5 as opposed to $60 for FIFA. Also the game is an arcade game, which means not everything is so detail oriented which can be a huge turn off for those who just want to play the game.

Bottom line, this game is pretty fun and footie fans could do a lot worse if they are looking for something of this caliber. I’ve been playing it for the better part of a week now and find it a refreshing breather in between my bouts of FIFA 10.

Trailer after the break!
