Emberwind Coming to iPhone and iPod Touch

EmberwindTimeTrap Games just announced that they’re bringing their gnome-platformer Emberwind to the iPhone and iPod Touch this spring.

While no exact release date is mentioned, the game was well reviewed by our own Geoff Gibson, and seems to me it would make an excellent addition to the mobile market. Fingers crossed for the leap to the iPad as well.

Here is TimeTrap’s full press release:

TimeTrap announces Emberwind is to be released on iPhone and iPod Touch this spring

Bring your favourite gremlin smacking adventure anywhere you go this spring.

Gothenburg, Sweden – February 16th, 2010 – Indie game developer TimeTrap teams up with developer and handheld specialist Innogiant to bring the action packed retro platformer to the iPhone and iPod Touch platform.

Emberwind was initially released for the PC and Mac platform in December 2009 and was well received by both press and gamers. Its lush beatiful graphics and easy to pick up game play accompanied with the skill progression system offers something both for the casual and younger audience while still providing a challenge for the avid gamers.

Hookedgamer.com writes about Emberwind: “Emberwind is a solid game. I honestly can’t find anything wrong with it. I for one will certainly return to the city of Grendale for some repeat action to fill the time between the big AAA titles releases this spring.”

Erik Möller, founder of TimeTrap says “Bringing Emberwind to a mobile platform is a natural next step and rather than taking our resources from developing our upcoming titles we chose to team up with Innogiant. With their proven track record on the platform and our already portable source code I’m confident they will create a great experience on the iPhone and iPod Touch platform.”

About TimeTrap
TimeTrap is an assembly of independent game developers with the mission to bring fun and polished titles to the market. Next-gen games take an outrageous amount of resources and are sometimes no more fun or profitable than the simplest titles. TimeTrap strives to promote and recapture the spirit of retro gaming but approach it from the perspective of gamers today.

About Innogiant
Innogiant is a newly founded independent game development studio located in Tampere, Finland. The studio focuses on downloadable games ranging from handheld devices (PSP / PSP Go / iPhone) to PC and Mac. The driving force of this studio are four co-founders with strong backgrounds in mobile and handheld software development.

10 Great Indie Games You Didn’t Play in 2009

IndieGamesMany, many indie games get released each year. Big ones, small ones, ones that suck, ones that are great. In fact, in some ways, the indie “industry” isn’t all that different from the mainstream video game industry. We have our superstar, sure-to-be-a-hit titles like: Torchlight, Machinarium, and Trine and then we have our sleeper hits like: I MAED A GAME WITH ZOMBIES!!!, JUMP! and Osmos. Finally, we also have our games that should have been a hit, but, for whatever reason, just seemed to slip through the cracks of the gaming world. Here are our top ten picks for 2009′s most under-appreciated titles:

Before I begin, allow me to simply state that I am, in no way, calling these titles a commercial failure. I don’t know the goals set out for these titles, nor do I know the final sales numbers. This list is largely based on my own opinion about games that should have been more appreciated but, ultimately, weren’t. For all I know, every single one of these titles could have been a commercial success.

The Man Behind the Gnome… Emberwind’s Erik Möller [Interview]

006Recently we wrote our review of Emberwind, a delightful new platformer from indie developers TimeTrap, and, while we gave the game high marks all around, we still had some questions. Luckily one of the creators of the game, Erik Möller, was nice enough to sit down and go over some of the finer details that we had questions about, like why the game’s not available on Steam and whether or not we’ll ever see an XBLIG/WiiWare version.

Enjoy the interview guys, there’s lots of information to be had for anybody interested in this game.

Interview after the break.

The Little Gnome Who Could… Emberwind [Review]

Box-coverFor a while now we’ve been talking about Emberwind, a fantasy platformer with traces of RPG elements mixed in for good measure. It even managed to make it onto a list we wrote that was supposed to be for 2010 indie games only (back before a release date was announced). So suffice it to say, we were a little eager to get our hands all over it in order to bring you guys a review. Well, we got it, we reviewed it, and now here’s what we’ve got for you.

Before we jump right into the review, allow me to explain the game a little bit. Emberwind is a platformer set in a medieval fantasy setting. While it has all the usual traits of platforming — jumping, “coin” collecting, points — it also has a spot of RPG elements tied in as well. While hardcore RPG enthusiasts probably won’t be getting their fix from Emberwind, the game does allow for some character growth by way of attacking and health. As you kill more Gremlins you’ll increase your health and as you find specific  runes you’ll increase your attack power. Nothing too advanced — this ain’t no Dragon Age afterall — but enough to keep the game more interesting than a traditional platformer.

Emberwind Launches on PC and Mac Today with Demo

Gremlin_GuardEverybody’s favorite Gnome, Kindle Elderwood, is finally making his debut today in Emberwind, a delightful RPG/platformer hybrid. The game is available through TimeTrap’s own webstore and is currently selling for $12.00. Both versions are available right now as you read this.

For those who still don’t know much about the game, or who want to try before they buy TimeTrap has also made available a free demo that’s available right now.

As many may remember Emberwind was originally featured Emberwind in our “Top 10 Break Out Indie Games of 2010” post which was written before a release date was announced and the game was presumed to have launched in early January. We aren’t complaining though as getting a game sooner rather than later is always a positive.

I’m working fervently on getting our own review posted by tonight so keep an eye out for it. I won’t get into specifics here, but I will say that the game is good… very good. Especially if your a platforming fan.

TimeTrap’s Emberwind gets Release Date

Box-coverOops! Looks like we are gonna have to scratch one off our “Top Ten Break Out Indie Games of 2010” as it would appear Emberwind is getting a release just within 2009… December 8th actually. Just a mere week away.

For those that don’t recall, Emberwind is an action platformer set in a medieval fantasy world. You play as a Gnome named Kindle Elderwood whose job it is to save the city from a rampaging horde of gremlins… the arch-nemesis of gnomes. Well, the game doesn’t actually say that last part, but it makes sense nonetheless. Both are small, stout, and awkward. It’s a rivalry born and bred into their creation! Probably…

Anyways, the game is getting released on December 8th for $12. Any takers?
