Today I look at Beneath The Tunnels Deep, a game created for Fuck This Jam a few months back by the highly creative Team Infinite Cats. Beneath The Tunnels Deep is a point and click misadventure game which brings in a great deal of pop culture references from the start.

Like any good adventure game you are placed in a situation from which you must escape and in doing so leads you on a journey of exploration and horror. Beneath The Tunnels Deep is full of humour and great little jabs at the genre throughout whether it be from picking up a coat or figuring out some puzzle with a coat hanger it works very well.

Along with the compelling gameplay the overall aesthetic choice is minimalistic but great. It really brings out the game and only adds to the many zany situations you come across.

Average play time – 8 minutes

If you have ever played a point and click adventure game Beneath the Tunnels Deep is a great choice due to its satirisation of the genre. That said, it does still stand up very well on its own and the game can be enjoyed for its own merits also.

Beneath The Tunnels Deep can be played here.

It would seem that Nyu Media really are the plucky little localization group that could. Despite a partnership with Capcom (giving them a direct line to Valve), they’ve struggled to get each of their translated Japanese indie games onto Steam. Cherry Tree High Comedy Club was originally released back in April, and it seemed like it would stay relegated to the smaller online retailers – a shame, as our Sarah Bishop quite liked it, according to her review here. Thankfully, the winds of fate seem to have changed, and Nyu Media are happily announcing that the game is due to hit Steam on the 8th of November.

Not quite an adventure game and not quite a visual novel, CTHCC falls into that unusual hybrid genre of ‘life sims’. In this case, the adventures of a high-school girl and her quest to establish a successful comedy club at her school, inbetween juggling day to day goals and the general state of her education. It’s whimsical, fluffy easygoing stuff aimed at a more casual market. Not the usual sort of thing you see localized (hardcore arcade shooters seem an easier sell), but it’s nice to see more of this sort of thing making the leap. Here’s the official trailer, too:

The game is for Windows PCs only, and usually retails around the $8 mark, although this re-launch will inevitably come with some kind of small launch discount. While you wait for the Steam release, you can try the demo on the official site here and see what you make of it yourself..

It is not everyday that you find a very whimsical game, you know, a game that just has a lot of irreverent comedy, based around the continually popular theme of the apocalypse. Apocalypse Later is the brainchild of David S Gallant and has you play as a child, hell bent on taking over the world and ruling supreme.

The story and character reminds me a lot of Stewie from the first few seasons of Family Guy (when it was still good), as this was also his purpose original in the long running TV show. However ending the world is always a difficult affair and requires a bit more time than you would expect, because of this you have a list to complete to usher in the destruction of the world. It is quite inspired really from making brimstone to repairing your pirate ship the gameplay is just light hearted fun, with many daft comments made throughout.

Apocalypse Later is a point and click game with a great level of humour and although being very easy, makes for a very fun game to take you out of reality for a few minutes. The graphic styling is nice, although quite basic it fits into the overall scene and idea very nicely working well overall.

Average play time – 10 minutes

Apocalypse Later is a fun zany game with some great comedy elements to it. I greatly enjoyed the playthrough of it, although lacking in audio it did not detract too much from the gameplay overall. Apocalypse Later can be played in browser here and David S Gallant’s site is here, incase you want to check out any of his other work.

If you are a developer with A fun indie game that can be played over a coffee break, we want to hear from you! Private message us on twitter @IndieGameMag or shoot us an email at editors@indiegamemag.com with the subject “Indie Intermission” and you could be our indie intermission pick of the day!

Wadjet Eye Games have had a long standing history in creating and developing adventure games, now teamed up with Wormwood Studios Primordia is their latest title. Primordia is a retro styled point and click adventure game. The studio have tried to combine the challenge and depth of the more old school adventure titles with the streamlined interface and player-friendly design of more modern titles, to generate a much more engaging game.

Many ages have passed since legendary man walked the planet. In this desolate wastelands beyond the city of Metropol, a solitary robot named Horatio fiercely guards his freedom and independence. Horatio’s converted power source is however stolen, leading him on a perilous journey into the wastes and his own mysterious past.

The story sounds very interesting, set in this dystopian future it paints the picture of an empty world. The art styling for Primordia is fantastic and entirely hand drawn with fifty rooms to explore and dozens of distinctive characters, along with complex machines to interact with. Primordia even has wonderful and highly distinctive cutscenes to really engage the player, enriching the playing experience.

Primordia is a point and click adventure game that encourages logical thinking within its puzzles, compared to many point and clicks that just challenge you with the idea of trial and error. It will no doubt have a fantastic narrative to go along with the puzzles, if the setting is anything to go by.

If the artwork is anything to go by, Primordia looks to be a fantastic new addition to the point and click genre. Primordia is scheduled to be released on PC in December but be sure to check out all the latest from Wormwood Studios here and Wadjet Eye Games can be found here. We are hoping to have a hands on with Primordia later this month, so be sure to check back to The Indie Game Magazine for all the latest indie news as it breaks.

A couple of days ago on Kickstarter saw the latest project from Phr00t in his fantastic Sci-Fi series. 3089 is the fourth installment in the futuristic 3D open world action RPG with randomly generated terrain, items, weapons, and from the looks of it everything else as well.

It is very exciting to see the series develop phenomenally from the 2D top down state into what is now proposed to be a full 3D randomly generated smooth flowing seemingly endless world.

These are some of the key features that make 3089 really unique:

Terrain will be smoothly generated (no more blocky gaming)

Much more procedural generation in endless biome types and textures

Unique quests made from individually generated task lists

Randomly generated vehicles, from small hovercrafts to large ships

Weapons construction & customization based on individual parts

Limitless height & depths

Dynamic lighting

Complete storyline with procedurally generated exploring

Integrated physics engine

The Kickstarter video from Phr00t can be seen below and highlights the series so far:

It really sounds that Phr00t is really pulling out all the stops and really upping the ante from 3079 in lovingly expanding the series. 3079 was a huge success and I have high expectations that the sequel 3089 will at least reach the same level but will more than likely surpass the previous title.

3089 seems to be pulling together a load of new and great ideas into this Sci-Fi world in an ever evolving and changing world, really giving each individual player a unique and memorable experience.

3089 is currently in the early stages of development and is live on Kickstarter now. Phr00t set a very modest goal of $1 000 with the vast amount spent on modeling characters and sprites in the game. However don’t let the low figure fool you as all extra funds will be used to develop the game to an even greater extent. The low goal is simply to cover the minimum, however all extra on top will really improve 3089 and help make it the game Phr00t envisioned it to be.

If you are a fan of the series or love the look of 3089 then please back it on Kickstarter here.

The people at Allgraf want to test gamers’ ability to survive in a world which is no more inviting than a dark alleyway. In fact, the world of Darkout is kind of like a dark alleyway. But instead of an alleyway, it is a world which you are not welcome to and instead of darkness simply being an environmental factor it is fully one of your enemies. So maybe Darkout is way more hostile then an alleyway, but luckily the devs give players plenty of tools to bring light to a world encased by darkness.

First of all, Darkout is a side-scrolling platformer and sandbox game. Players are fully able to collect materials, build shelter, and create weapons and armor from the surrounding world. To create these weapons players need to research technology and gather the proper components. Much like in other sandbox games, the crafting element is a strong feature and absolutely necessary for survival in this world of darkness.

The aforementioned surrounding world is full of hostile enemies hidden in the dusky foliage and the key to fighting them is the light. Therefore, players must both use light as cover and use light-based weapons to fight the mysterious creatures of the island. By protecting oneself from the monsters gamers can then build more structures. Progress in Darkout is achieved through assembling materials, battling bosses, and upgrading structures. All of this takes place in a randomly generated world ripe with replayability.

Darkout will be released first for PC then for Mac with later ports coming to Ipad and Xbox Live. The people at Allgraf are working hard to advertise their game and there are many places to learn more about Darkout. Here’s a list of them: Official Website, Twitter, Greenlight, and Indiegogo.

Anna’s Quest is an interesting point-and-click adventure game that was originally inspired by The Brothers Grimm & Hans Christian Andersen. What makes it different though? Anna’s Quest has a sci-fi twist to it! Point-and-click games, as you know, aren’t so popular these days, but Anna’s Quest offers something unique and special in terms of story. The story follows Anna (as the name of the suggests), who is a young girl desperately trying to find a cure for her Grandpa’s sickness. In the mean time, she has been thrown in a tower under lock and key by an evil witch. Bad news for the old witch though. Anna has telekinetic forces within her and her own ways to escape the tower.

The game is a point-and-click, so it’s easily explainable. This specific title seems to be more focused on the story than your average point-and-click where it’s about solving puzzles and etc. While there is some of it there, Anna’s Quest is very story driven. It seems to have been getting some good feedback, so apparently in terms of design, that was a great way to go. One part of the game that players are going to absolutely love is the fact that the game is entirely voice acted and is packed with its very own original soundtrack.

Anna’s Quest has a free demo and if you decide to purchase the full game, it’s going to set you back by $5. It is completely DRM free, so that is something players will also enjoy. You can head on over to developer Krams Design’s website to either download the demo or purchase the game.

Hi, my name is Petey and I am a poor as could be college student who lives in a dorm and struggles to finish his tasks each and every day. I have homework, eat ramen, buy books, etc. I am the typical college student. My life is no adventure. Oh, wait… it is an adventure. In fact, it is an adventure game called Life in the Dorms.

Life in the Dorms, from Moment Games, is an old-school adventure game for the modern console! Dack is the main character; a kid who just started school and was homesick even before he got there. The player needs to help Dack adjust, by leading him through the puzzles of orientation. These puzzles include lessons about love, friendship, dating, and even ramen noodles. These preceding obstacles can be quite the hassle for a freshly deemed college student.

If the dangers of these puzzles were not enough, Dack also has a psychopathic roommate who enjoys dabbling with axes! Oh, well it is college and Dack can always make other friends. Dack’s primary means of meeting people is an in-game social networking feature called “Flitter”. Not only can Dack update people on the goings-ons of his life, but he also needs to use “Flitter” to solve a variety of puzzles. All of this leads Dack to success, or whatever success finishing college orientation can bring you, in this tale of growing up in the world of college.

Life in the Dorms promises to be a fun and zany experience for those who love adventure games and hate college. The development of Life in the Dorms is being handled by Paul Franzen (Editor-in-Chied of GameCola.net) and Ted Hung (creator of Office Disorders). Life in the Dorms comes out September 14th, which is tomorrow if you’re reading this today, on XBLIG.

To the Moon, the indie hit from Freebird Games, is now available for purchase on Steam. The adventure classic is available by itself or with the original soundtrack in a bundle. Those who owned an original copy can contact Freebird Games by email with an original order ID# and redeem it for a copy of the Steam version of To the Moon. So, what is To the Moon?

To the Moon is an adventure game in which a dying man named Johnny gets the opportunity to live out one last wish. Two doctors, Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts, stand beside Johnny’s death bed and give him an opportunity to relive the entirety of his life; unfortunately, it is the last thing he will ever be able to do. To the Moon is an exploration of the question “What If?”

Players must make life decisions in To the Moon. It gives a rare opportunity for players to relive life decisions, give love another shot, rediscover friendships, and search for fame and fortune. To the Moon is an exploration of what life can be, presented through an interactive story, with minimalistic gameplay. It is difficult to describe To the Moon’s style of play, and although it looks like a JRPG, it plays more like a point-and-click adventure.

To the Moon has been met by rave reviews, including an outstanding review from ourselves here at Indiegamemag.com. It has been raved for its gripping narrative and outstanding original soundtrack.
