Super Meat Boy Soundtrack is a Feast for your Ears

dannyboyIf you haven’t been playing Super Meat Boy for the past week, you’ve been missing out.  Not just missing out on a great game, and it is a truly great game, but also on some ridiculously catchy music.  Fans, myself included, have been not so patiently waiting for the soundtrack’s release, and now it is finally here for your aural pleasure.  Well, technically it’s not here, but rather on composer DannyB’s bandcamp page.

For the small sum of $3.99 (or more if you’re feeling generous) you can download all 33 tracks, adding up to over 90 minutes of meaty music.  The soundtrack spans musical styles ranging from electronic rock, orchestrated pieces, and even a vocal track or two when you include the five remix tracks from artists George Dziov, Inverse Phase, Mattias Häggström Gerdt (anosou), C418 and Josh Whelchel.  Also note that in late November there is going to be a physical special edition of the soundtrack available with extra tracks, including some that didn’t make it into the final game.  I’m not nearly that patient though, and have the soundtrack even playing right now as I write about it.

Go on, download the Super Meat Boy soundtrack now at MeatBoyMusic.com

Indie Game Strategy Guides, Walkthroughs, and General Tips and Tricks

DIYlogoYou may have noticed a new trend here at DIY HQ over the past few months. While we continue to provide you guys with tons of news, reviews, previews and interviews concerning the indie video game industry, since July we’ve steadily been increasing the amount of indie game guides as well.

Well, I’m here to let you guys know that our guides thus far have been a resounding success. Apparently, despite the recent boom in indie games, there has yet to be an equal amount of of tertiary support for said games in the form of guides. As such we’re looking to write more of them in order to put together a nice little database of helpful guides in the future.

The reason why I’m writing this now is because we want to know what games you’d specifically like us to track down and write a guide for. While we can’t cover them all, we also can’t predict necessarily what games are going to require a guide or not. So, if there is a game coming up or one that got recently released that’s stumping you pretty bad, let us know. Our own Mike Rose is fantastic at putting these things together.

In the mean time, feel free to check out our various walkthroughs/guides:

Game Dev Story (iPhone) Tips and Tricks Guide

gamedevstory2Game Dev Story is one of the most addictive iPhone games available at the moment – just check out our review to understand why. There’s so much depth to the game that sometimes it’s hard to know exactly what to do next.

Hence, we’ve put together this handy guide, answering all the most important questions and proving hints and a good walkthrough for how to get the most out of the game.

Looking for an answer that isn’t provided here? Simply leave your question in the comment section below, and we’ll be happy to help you out!

Which game genres and types work well together?

When it comes to creating your game, combining genres and types is usually a case of using your common sense. Initially, it’s best to use combinations that are obvious choices – for example, any type of RPG will always work well with the Fantasy type, while the Card Game genre works beautifully with the Dungeon type.

Once you’ve got a bit of money under your belt, you can then begin to experiment with more ‘out there’ combinations. Even if the combinations you pick don’t work so well, it’s still worth trying, as every time a genre or type hits level 2, you’ll receive 2 extra points to increase the stats of future games. Hence, leveling up as many different genres and types as possible is a great idea.

How often should contract work be chosen?

Contract work is useful in that it gives you development points, which can be used to level up your employees and boost the stats of your current game. When you first start the game, it’s a good idea to do one bit of contract work between each game project. Make sure to always choose work that is definitely going to be possible – anything with a time limit of less than 10 weeks, and you probably won’t get it done.

Once you get fully rolling, you may never need to do contract work, as your devs may well earn enough development points through build the games. At this point, it’s up to you if you want to do contract work or not – it does a good job of breaking up the main flow of the game, and keeping the addiction a little fresher.

However, there is one tactical aspect to taking on contract work. The best time to release a game is just before Christmas (around month 11/12), and games usually take around four months to develop – although this changes depending on how good your team is. Hence if it’s May, you may well want to take on a few contract jobs to let time pass a little, then start development in August so that your game will be ready at the peak of Christmas shopping.

When should I hire more/new staff?

When you first begin, it’s best to choose whichever are the best staff available to you. Make sure you fill every seat in your offices, as the more staff you have, the better your games will be.

Once you have the option of looking in more classy places for staff, do so immediately – well, as long as you have the cash. Getting rid of staff with poor stats feels harsh, but you’ll be able to find candidates with stats that are 5 or 6 times higher than your current lot, so it’s really not worth keeping them on – leveling them up that high will cost far more than it’s worth.

Check for new staff in between every game project, and by the tenth year, you should have a full team of workers with triple-figure stats. Make sure you take on a good range of skills – at the very least, have one sound engineer, one designer, one writer and two coders. Remember, however, that the better the staff, the higher their salaries will be, and wages disappear at the end of March, so making sure you have enough money to pay them all at that point is essential!

What’s the deal with hackers?

When searching for workers, you may come across hackers. These guys have ridiculously good stats, yet when you take them on, they turn out to be not so great. Basically, they’re massively talented, but don’t have any direction or focus. Take on every hacker you find, then use the Career Change Manual (bought from the salesman) to give them a proper job. Their stats will drop slightly at the point, but it’s still very much worth it.

What should I buy from the salesman?

Every year, a salesman will come to visit, bearing rather expensive wares. Initially you most likely won’t be able to afford the stuff he has to offer, but when you’ve got enough cash together, make sure you start to grab his boosts. You’ll want to buy the Fun, Creativity, Graphics and Sound Boosts, as these allow you to add extra points to your current game.

Once you’ve bought these four, do not bother with anything else other than the Career Change Manual. Buy three of these every time the salesman comes calling, as they are incredibly useful – especially if you want a hardware engineer (see later in the guide).

What console should I choose for my latest game?

This is where a decent knowledge of real-life gaming platforms from the last 20 years comes into play. Every console available in Game Dev Story is based on a real console, albeit with a slightly different name and design. Not only that, but the success or failure of each console is based loosely around how well its real-life counterpart did too.

With this in mind, it’s relatively simple to work out which platforms to develop for and which to stay well away from. Early in the game, developing for the Intendro consoles – such as the Game Kid and the Super IES – is definitely a good idea. Watch the Share percentages, and keep developing for a console until its share has fallen considerably lower than the rest, as purchasing licenses for the later consoles can cost a fair amount.

When Sonny enters the market, it’s a good idea to jump on the PlayStatus, as that keeps going for a good several years. By the time it has run its course, you’ll most likely have collected together the funds and the tools to create your own console. Make sure you put the maximum amount of money and effort into creating your own hardware, but also make sure you have a substantial amount of cash spare too, as console development takes a very long time.

Once your console is complete, make sure from that point on that you only develop for your own console – this way, the share will stay high and you’ll make the maximum amount of cash.

How do I get a hardware engineer for making my own consoles?

Perhaps the biggest secret in Game Dev Story, bagging a hardware engineer is simple – if expensive – stuff. The idea is to level up one of your staff to the max in every type of role. This can be done with a combination of development points and Career Change Manuals (from the salesman). Level your chosen character up to level 5 in whatever role they’re in, then use the Career Change Manual to swap their job to something they aren’t already level 5 in.

Level them up to level 5 in this role, then repeat until they are level 5 in every available role. Now use the Career Change Manual on them once more, and the Hardware Engineer role will now be available for selection. Choose this, and you’ll then be able to develop your own console.

How do I make sequels, and how often should I do so?

Sequels can only be developed if the original game made it into the Hall of Fame. Any game that manages to get a cumulative review score of 35 or over enters into the Hall of Fame, and you’ll then be able to make a sequel to it.

Sequels are very useful in that they start with plenty of points available straight away, meaning that the finished product will most likely be very highly rated and make you lots of money. There are two issues with sequels – firstly, if you make too make sequels to a row, your fans will grow tired of your antics and start to diminish. The way to combat this is to wedge a brand new game in between each sequel, to keep your games fresh.

The other issue with sequels is that you’re forced to use the genre and type of the original game, hence you won’t be able to try out new genres and earn yourself extra points for bumping future games up. It’s best to develop a sequel as every third game you make when you’re doing OK for cash, and when you’re absolutely rolling in it and there’s no money problems whatsoever, you may not even want to make sequels at all.

Who should I choose to write/design/create sound effects for my current game?

This is where having a good range of workers on your team pays off. Writers are always the best people to have script your game for you, while designers are best at graphics and sound engineers are best at sound and music. However, you should never use the same person twice in a row for two games – if you used a person in the last project, it will say ‘Prev’ just next to their name.

Having two of each type of worker, then, is a very good idea – although the likes of Producers and Directors will usually do a pretty decent job too. There’s always the temptation to use an outside source and pay a ridiculous amount for someone with very high stats, but most of the time it’s not worth it at all – choosing these guys can be very risky, as sometimes they’ll do a terrible job, then charge a ridiculous amount.

Just keep your workforce varied, and you should never need to outsource your projects.

Which advertising should I use, and how often should I use it?

Advertising affects both your company, and your current game. Using advertising during development is the best time to implement it, as it adds to both the hype of your game, and the fame of your company.

It’s only ever useful to choose the most expensive advertising going, as the less expensive options won’t add much to your fan count. However, when you first begin, it’s best to use whichever is ideal to your current budget – just make sure you use advertising at least one during each game’s development.

Once you’ve got plenty of money, use advertising lots of times during development, until the Hype rating for the game is close to 100. It can be expensive, but it’s definitely worth it, as your games will sell incredibly well.

When my staff ask to help, should I say yes?

During contract work, alway say no – the whole point of contract work is to earn development points, so using development points to speed up the process is pointless!

For game development, however, it all depends, as failure can result in lots of bugs to tidy up. Early on in the game, your devs will most likely not be skilled enough to pull this off with a success, so it’s best to say no to them. However, later on they’ll be able to do it with 80% success rate pretty much every time – at this point, you should always say yes, as these boosts can be extremely useful.

Hilariously, once you have the boosts from the salesman, you might as well say yes to your workers anyway, as the extra bugs can actually be useful! Each bug cleaned up will earn you one development point, hence if you have lots of bugs to clean up, this may give you the opportunity to use the various boosts you have bought and make the game ever better.

How do I get the Game of the Year award?

Achieving the Game of the Year award can be tricky, but if you focus on one project in particular – usually a sequel – it’s definitely doable. To be in with the chance your game needs to get at least 37/40 points in reviews – i.e. one 10, and the rest 9s.

Make sure all your staff are fully prepared and are not tired, then make a sequel to a very popular game. Give each job to the staff with the highest stats, then use each of the boosts you’ve bought from the salesman to send the stats through the roof. You should gather at least 300 points for Fun, then at least 100 for each of the others – possibly even 150 if you can manage it. Make sure to Hype up your game with advertising too

Mr. Minecraft Coming to PC Super Meat Boy

How do you make one of the most addicting platformers ever created even more so?  How about by adding some Minecraft to it? It was always part of Team Meat’s plan to have exclusive content in each version of Super Meat Boy, but they have been very hush hush as to what exactly that content would be.  And apparently, that may be in part because it’s coming together very serendipitously at the last minute.  Just yesterday through a Twitter exchange Team Meat and Minecraft‘s Markus Persson sealed the deal, with details as to how Mr. Minecraft will play being fleshed out away from Twitter’s prying eyes.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that digging through levels would thoroughly break Super Meat Boy‘s finely tuned balance, but who knows?  There are so many things to do in Minecraft that a Meat Boy character could have any number of unique attributes.  In any case, I can’t wait to see what else Super Meat Boy has in store when it hits Steam next month.

Sticky Fingers – 5g – “You unlocked Gish by collecting 10 bandages! Go you!” – Once you get your first 10 bandages, you’ll get this achievement. It’s easy in Chapter 1.

The End – 65g – “You beat the game!… but that’s not the end, is it?” – Just run the the 6 Chapters in the Light World and you’ll get this achievement after beating Dr. Fetus. You only need to beat 17 of each Chapter to unlock the boss level if you’re looking to save time.

I’m a Golden God – 20g – “You got 100% on Super Meat Boy, start bragging!” – Check your statistics in the main menu. You’ll need to collect 100 bandages, get every warp zone and beat every level on par time to get this super-achievement.

Suffragette (Secret Achievement) – 10g – “You’ve beaten the Cotten Alley all by yourself!” – Just beat the Light World of The Cotton Alley and you’ll unlock this achievement. But remember, The Cotton Alley is no joke.

Hi,
Thanks for the tips, it helps.
A question anyway : How to get to the bandage in level 2-18 Light world ?

October 20, 2010 at 2:50 pm

If you look in the lower left corner of that middle contraption, you’ll see one of the bricks looks hollow. On your way back after unlocking the whole contraption, just get through that block and you’ll gain access to that center window area. You just need to wait for the small moments where all the lasers drop out.

  • Dove says:

Woh dude, Thanks.
I would never have found out how to get in !

How do you get to the warp zone in 2-12 light world? I can only find one key,

October 20, 2010 at 3:04 pm

It literally falls from the sky into the spikes below between two of the pedestals. You need to grab the first key, jump two platforms to the left (dodging saws), and then catch the key mid-air.

Thanks for answering, I need help again, where is the warp zone at 2-8? Its hard to find since all black

October 20, 2010 at 4:32 pm

Counting the “towers,” look at the very top of the third one. It’ll be spinning around discreetly at the top. Just jump up and in from the left hand side and you’ll get in.

Just a question, how do I get to the warp zone in 4-18 in the light world?

October 20, 2010 at 4:41 pm

That’s one of the sneakiest ones and I passed it many times.

You have to get up to the hole where the demon missiles are firing from and run right behind the wall to the right of it. There is no visible trace of the warp zone, but it’s definitely there.

October 20, 2010 at 10:30 pm

Don’t see this talked about, but there’s a glitched “minus” world (or -1). In the forest if you see Bandage Girl “glitching” (any level it seems) and you get to her without dying, you’ll unlock the minus world.

October 21, 2010 at 1:20 am

There is indeed, TK – in fact, there’s a glitch world in every world. However, we’ve planning on writing up a ‘How to beat the toughest levels’ guide alongside this one, so that particular bit of info will go in there

Hey i can’t find the bandage in 1-5x Cream soda. I’ve looked everywhere and i cant find it

October 21, 2010 at 1:21 am

I’m pretty sure I know the one you mean… if I’m thinking of the right level, jump up the right past the saws, then when you get to the top of there, jump up to the next saws – you’ll see the bandage just beneath the saw on the left

  1. SMBoy says:

October 21, 2010 at 1:59 am

I dont suppose someone can help me find the ward zone on 5-7 (The Rapture) I’m trying to unlock The Guy! But cant find the damn warp zone.

Also, there are 21 bandages on The Forest and i’ve completed it 105%.

October 21, 2010 at 6:58 am

The game appears to glitch on certain levels and not flag a collected bandage. But be careful, I’ve found that this also sometimes mean that the game has stopped autosaving. So if you grab the same bandage several times and keep playing, sometimes you’ll lose all your progress. My chapter 2 is currently sitting at 105%.

October 21, 2010 at 4:28 am

You missed a secret warp zone in world 1…. appears on stage 1-14 behind bandage girl and is located on the map as a yellow box before stage 1-1. The stage name is this: _| |> ._. |>

Its a weird one, text goes like russian or some random language for that 1 level.

October 21, 2010 at 4:58 am

Actually Hamster, that’s not a secret warp zone – there’s a special glitched set of levels in each world, and you find them by touching Bandage Girl when she’s glitched (she does this randomly now and again). As mentioned above, we’re planning on talking about these in a separate guide coming soon

  • SMBoy says:

October 21, 2010 at 6:47 am

That’s not russion. It’s a Kill Screen – I translated it here – http://dznr.org/a0al

11.  Dove says:

Hi again !

I can’t get the bandage in 3-4.
If I grab it, I fall in the salt and die.
Could you tell me the trick please ?

Thx

October 21, 2010 at 6:47 am

Hi Dove,

I think I remember the level you mean – and unfortunately you won’t be able to get that particular bandage yet. Certain bandages are in such nasty places that you’ll need to unlock certain other characters first. Once you’ve unlocked the right character, you’ll know what to do

  • Dove says:

October 21, 2010 at 7:57 am

Thx dude,

Then I guessed right figuring out that it was impossible to take it with MeatBoy

I can’t find the Warp Zone in 3-16 :/ could you tell me where it is? am i just being stupid?

October 21, 2010 at 7:23 am

From where you start. Don’t move. Just…wait.

13.  Randal says:

October 21, 2010 at 7:44 am

I can’t seem to figure out how to get the bandage on 4-16…

October 21, 2010 at 7:51 am

You can see the bandage by your head behind a gate. But if you look above bandage girl, you’ll see a switch. You need to hit that switch, get back to the bandage alive, and then do it all over again.

14.  Lee Nygma says:

October 21, 2010 at 9:20 am

If you 100% The Forest World you unlock Teh Internets. Which appears to be where the DLC will be? It has several sections saying Coming Soon. The unlocked world is in a 16 bit style is a dayum hard and Meat Boy is the only playable character.

October 21, 2010 at 10:33 am

Hey Lee,

you unlock Teh Internets by collecting 20 bandages, but obviously if the first 20 bandages you get are the Forest bandages, then you’ll finish the Forest and get Teh Internets at the same time

Teh Internets is indeed where the DLC will appear, although there is already some there to play, as you pointed out.

15.  Person says:

October 21, 2010 at 11:42 am

Hey where is the warp on 5-7?

October 21, 2010 at 1:23 pm

It’s on the far right side of the far tower. You need to get there fast to get inside. The opening is above the saw in the upper right.

16.  Fluktuation says:

October 21, 2010 at 1:05 pm

I found bandages not listed in the walkthrough in 5-5 and 5-9

October 21, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Ah! I see the one in 5-5, but did you find 2 Bandages in 5-9? We have that one listed already.

17.  Yac says:

October 21, 2010 at 1:22 pm

I just can’t seem to find this one. Where’s the bandage in Chapter 1 – Warp zone Hand Held Hack 1-3?

October 21, 2010 at 1:26 pm

This one is kind of hard to see against the saws. But at the top of the level before Bandage Girl, where the multiple saws are shooting up and down it’s in the middle at the height of a jump.

  • Yac says:

October 21, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Thank you!

Any more info on the over 100% completion issue? Is it a bug? I reached 109% on Chapter 1, played one level, died, returned to map, and it ticked up to 110%. Plus got 21 bandages in the same chapter, with at least two more to go. Weirdness.

  • Yac says:

October 21, 2010 at 2:05 pm

Ok, so went back to Hand Held Hack, the bandage appeared again in 1-2, even though I already picked it up. I picked it up again and in 1-3, there was no bandage. Still gave me credit for getting the 2nd bandage. Oh well.

18.  Brett C says:

October 21, 2010 at 1:32 pm

How do you get that warp zone on 3-5? it’s behind a building and I can’t get to it.

October 21, 2010 at 1:42 pm

See that lock? You need to find the key. If you stand perfectly still at the start, you’ll see it…briefly.

19.  Fluktuation says:

October 21, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Yeah sorry, my mistake, I only found one. I can also say that there was only one bandage in 4-19x for me and I checked every block. You might’ve encountered a glitch there, as the last two bandages in this world are probably in a warp zone that has yet to be discovered.

20.  Chrome says:

October 21, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Could someone please point out to me, how you beat Dr. Fetus? I get to the room that looks like the one you start in but I don’t know what I’m supposed to do then.

October 21, 2010 at 5:20 pm

Look closely at the ceiling of that room.

21.  ApplsauceAvnger says:

October 21, 2010 at 6:40 pm

There is a warp zone in 5-12 “10 Horns”. It leads to a level called “Sunshine Island.” The warp zone is on top of the first mountain thing. You can get up there with Meat Boy, but a double jumper can do it much easier. I’m not sure how many bandages are in said zone yet (just started playing it). There’s at least one in the first area.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, didn’t see it on the list.

  • ApplsauceAvnger says:

October 21, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Okay, there are two bandages, in 1-1 and 1-3.

October 21, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Thanks!

That one is so out in the open…I think I hadn’t double checked it yet because it already had a bandage in it. I added to the list along with your name. Much appreciated.

22.  Randal says:

October 21, 2010 at 10:08 pm

According to the end of the chapter, I have everything from chapter 4. Both 20 light and dark world levels, 4 warp zones, 20 bandages and the negative world done, but it says I only have 96%. Any ideas why?

October 21, 2010 at 10:19 pm

That’s odd. It seems like most people are getting an over 100% glitch…not under.

I guess double check the bandage icons in all the levels and maybe try getting par time on everything? I’m really not sure.

  • ApplsauceAvnger says:

October 22, 2010 at 12:34 am

My Chapter 4 is the same way. I have done everything (including par times on all chapters, light and dark). I’ll double check to make sure I have all of my bandage icons, maybe one of mine is glitching.

October 22, 2010 at 1:12 am

Have you got an A+ on every level too? You need that for 100%

23.  kiz says:

October 22, 2010 at 1:02 am

hi guys. i dont know if any1 els said this but i have 30/20 bandages on chapter 1. 28/20 and chapter 2. is it supposed 2 be like this or not? any way it still counts towards my bandage total. 92 and counting. thanks

October 22, 2010 at 1:13 am

Hey kiz,

apparently it’s a bug, something to do with the warp zone bandages. We believe that your bandage counter will eventually go down to normal at some point, so sorry about that!

24.  SMBoy says:

October 22, 2010 at 3:21 am

So yeah. I’ve just got all 100 bandages. I’m only missing The Guy. His warp zone is just too damn hard.

So here they are, in no particular order.

Sorry for the ½ post.

October 22, 2010 at 8:12 am

Did you get double bandages anywhere to get 100? Otherwise, can you help us figure out which level we’re missing in Chapter 5?

26.  Fluktuation says:

October 22, 2010 at 5:32 am

I can confirm that the suffragette achievement is awarded for beating the cotton alley light world. I got an A+ on every level but I’m not sure if that is an aquirement. The description simply says: You’ve beaten the Cotton Alley all by yourself!

27.  Fluktuation says:

October 22, 2010 at 9:45 am

Weird, I just unlocked Meat Ninja and the I’m a golden god achievement by beating cotton alley dark world. Under statistics it shows 100% completion although I’m still missing one bandage in world 5 and world 4 completion is glitched and stuck at 96%. I’m looking for that last bandage now.

October 22, 2010 at 9:48 am

Thanks for the help Fluktuation. I see you’ve taken #2 on the leaderboards as well.

I’m stuck at 96% in Chapter 4 as well and have a few more things to get in Chapter 5. Meat Ninja, eh? I saw that character pop on screen at one point with a cryptic message.

28.  Seiken Enhasa says:

October 22, 2010 at 12:15 pm

Well, I’ve taken the #2 spot now, hahaha.

I also have the 96% completion glitch in world 4 and I’m missing 2 bandages in world 5, but I still got the golden god achievement. The achievement popped after I grabbed a bandage in level 7-12X (a stage called “Pink”) that isn’t mentioned in this guide. I grabbed it shortly after finishing up all the dark world levels. It was also my 99th bandage, but the meat ninja unlocked anyways.

  • Seiken Enhasa says:

October 22, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Oh…I thought the meat Ninja was the 100 bandage character, but I just looked at the character select and he isn’t. Weird.

  • Fluktuation says:

October 22, 2010 at 2:37 pm

Wow nice find there, that bandage seems completely out of place, I’d never looked for bandages in worlds 6 and 7. Now I have 100 bandages and unlocked the Ninja from N, but there’s still the missing bandage in world 5. I guess they might’ve messed up there too :-/
Hopefully they fix some of these glitches including the zero seconds one people are exploiting left and right

  • Fluktuation says:

October 22, 2010 at 2:39 pm

Also it raised my percentage for Cotton Alley to 103, so it is probably another glitch. Maybe the missing bandage somehow wound up there from world 5 lol, I doublechecked all levels and just can’t find it.

29.  ACC3SS says:

October 22, 2010 at 2:03 pm

Confirmed. Just got “The Kid” achievement for completing Warp Zone 5-7 and unlocking The Kid.
GT: ACC3SS

PS. That was crazy hard.

30.  random11 says:

October 22, 2010 at 2:07 pm

I was in level 1-18 whitewash… in the dark world obv… and somehow went into a warp zone that isnt really a warp zone.. it takes you to zone ” – 1″ like the glitch in supermario one the level does not have a name, or rather the name of the level is in jumbles up characters that remind me of missingno cheet in pokemon. The level after you beat it/die… shows up right before level 1-1 in the light world map. and it doesnt show up as a warp zone either it looks like a white level. Anyone else get to this… I so far cant repeat whatever i did in whitewash to get there.

October 22, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Hi random,

check Hamster’s comment above, and my response to him

  • random11 says:

October 22, 2010 at 2:59 pm

yes im sorry i just actually read the comments (embarised) seems to be a popular glitch lol sorry

  • Fluktuation says:

October 22, 2010 at 3:13 pm

About these minus levels: I randomly ran into one while playing through world 6, the level was one of the flying ships from SMB3 complete with the cannons and everything. Unfortunately I did not beat it and unlike the others it did not show up on the map, don’t know what’s up with that.

October 22, 2010 at 3:16 pm

That sounds awesome. I narrowly missed hitting the glitched Bandage Girl in Chapter 6. You sure it’s not just hiding in the opposite world Dark -> Light, vice-versa?

  • Fluktuation says:

October 22, 2010 at 3:22 pm

Wow you were right, it’s right there in the light world. I must be blind or something. Maybe there’s one in world 7 too!?

  • random11 says:

October 22, 2010 at 3:40 pm

How can you tell if you are about to hit a gliched bandage girl?

  • Fluktuation says:

October 22, 2010 at 3:48 pm

random: Bandage girl looks all weird and glitched out, you’ll know when you see it.

31.  xrootx says:

October 22, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Any tip for getting the bandage on 3-19x? Feels like its impossible @_@

32.  Chrome says:

October 22, 2010 at 6:46 pm

I can’t figure out how to beat par time in babylon (4-20). In the room with the lava, I have to wait before I can proceed. There must be a way to rush through that part. Any help?

October 23, 2010 at 5:02 am

It’s just a case of moving really fast through the previous rooms, Chrome. In the second room, try to jump straight across to the right without waiting around, then you should be able to just make it through room 3 if you’re fast enough

33.  random11 says:

October 23, 2010 at 7:43 am

um so im done world 2… and somehow I have 21 bandages… it says 21/20!!!

34.  Quazae says:

October 23, 2010 at 1:56 pm

Hmm…Meat Boy glitching up in world 7? lolz.

Anyway, you should still check everywhere for that chapter 5 bandage, it could be in a wall like that Hell warpzone. And if there’s a hidden bandage in world 7, there could possibly be a hidden one in The End as well?

My opinions, I’m still waiting for the dammed WiiWare release :/

35.  Alastair says:

October 23, 2010 at 3:29 pm

If you get 100% in the game you unlock the meat ninja, that is super fast and can teleport. You can see him in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wVbKy_ylao

36.  Carbo says:

October 23, 2010 at 4:42 pm

The missing Bandage for Rapture is level 5-18X.

  • Carbo says:

October 23, 2010 at 4:44 pm

Should have mentioned where; it’s at the far left side and rises alongside the sawblade lift. You can squeeze into that gap there, and it actually makes the level a lot easier even.

October 24, 2010 at 10:42 am

Thanks Carbo! That was the final piece of the puzzle. And you’re right, that gap definitely makes the level easier.

37.  Phyz says:

October 23, 2010 at 8:07 pm

I can confirm

Ninja (N+) is unlocked at 100 bandages
and
Meat Ninja is unlocked at 100% completion

38.  JotaroRaido says:

October 23, 2010 at 9:45 pm

I can confirm that 100 bandages unlocks The Ninja from N+. Also, the character from the warp zone from 5-7 is called The Kid (from I Wanna Be The Guy), not The Guy. Says so right in his description, “Not The Guy”.

  • Chrome says:

October 24, 2010 at 6:10 am

The warpzone is called “The Guy”, though. Also, after beating IWBTG, the kid becomes the new guy.

39.  Linwood Knight says:

October 24, 2010 at 8:21 am

41.  Marc says:

October 24, 2010 at 2:19 pm

I can’t figure out the warpzone in 4-8 :/ I tried jumping through every wall there is, and waiting for some time for it to show up, like some warps require, and nothing

October 25, 2010 at 6:13 am

You have to get up to the discolored patch as quickly as possible. It’s not a matter of waiting for the Warp Zone to arrive, it’s about getting there before it disappears.

42.  random11 says:

October 24, 2010 at 2:23 pm

There are two bandages in 4-19X long goodbye. Both are behind cumble blocks one in the top aria and one in the bottom area… both are on the left of the map.

October 25, 2010 at 6:12 am

We found 2 as well, but we’ve confirmed that it only counts 1 bandage for getting (and surviving) with both.

I can choose all the normal levels (from 1 to 20 + boss) and I have another one that is what would be the mission 0.

All the letters are all mangled, the name of the map is “-3 |> ·_· |>”… I’ll post a link as soon as I have uploaded it.

The level unlocked for me doing the mission “3-10X Exploder”, just at the precise moment I touched the bandage princes >_>.

Super Crate Box Wants Your High Score Oct 22

For those who can’t get enough arcade action and funky pixel art, Vlambeer has you covered with their upcoming indie action game Super Crate Box.  The game comes out Oct 22 (this Friday!) and challenges you to get a high score while collecting crates and blasting aliens.  But there’s a catch, you only actually score points for collecting the crates.  The aliens then present a menacing, though optional, distraction.  Each crate also changes your equipped weapon, with some weapons significantly more useful than others, so you’ll need to constantly adjust how you play to your weapon at hand.

Vlambeer is also conducting a contest to win one of three very limited edition Collector’s Editions of Super Crate Box. All you need to do is take an interesting picture of yourself with a papercraft crate and you could win the Collector’s Edition that includes:

  • Super Crate Box Crate.
  • Super Crate Box Boxed edition.
  • Super Crate Box OST CD.
  • Super Crate Box Plushie.
  • Super Crate Box Papercraft Character.
  • Super Crate Box Limited Edition Poster.
  • Vlambeer lighter.

For more details on the contest, check here.

DIYGamer.com is Expanding Coverage to Include Mods!

Nehrim001So we’ve been discussing this for a while, but, aside from a few wayward posts, we hadn’t really endorsed coverage of mods (or game modifications). Up until this point we’ve attempted to strictly cover indie, independent, and student developed games. However, given that making mods is just as much in the DIY namesake as creating an indie game we feel we have no other choice but to expand our coverage.

So yeah, here’s how it will work:

If you or your team is creating a mod based on ANY game (indie, mainstream, or otherwise) let us know about it. We’d love to see what you’re working on to let our readers know about it. Also, if you are enjoying a specific mod, feel free to tell us.

We can’t promise that we’ll go out there and report on every mod ever released — that would be impossible at this point — as our main focus will remain with indie games, but if something gets brought to our attention we’ll most definitely make the time for it.

With that said, welcome to a new era in DIYGamer.com content.

For over a year now Oxeye Games has been hard at work on a game known only as “Project B.”  And though the game is still likely a year away from release, Oxeye is pulling back the curtain to unveil Project B as their new game Cobalt.  And between the guns, explosions, slow motion, somersaults, and wall-running acrobatics, it looks like the twisted love child of Super Meat Boy and Weapon of Choice.  Quite a departure from Oxeye’s previous games like Harvest: Massive Encounter.  And with eye-catching 2D visuals and music composed by anosou (Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Kaleidoscope) Cobalt should have style to spare.

Unfortunately, as I said earlier, Oxeye expects Cobalt to still be at least a year away from release.  But now that the game has been revealed, Oxeye plans on being more public about Cobalt‘s future developements, so expect to hear more in the coming months about this indie action title.  In the mean time, enjoy Cobalt‘s first action trailer.
