DevLinks: Across the Sea

Today’s DevLinks rounds up design musings, game updates, lovely art, and some excellent resources to refer to.

AltDevConf Session Videos (#AltDevBlogADay)
“We are pleased to present the recorded AltDevConf 2012 videos to the game development community! Thank you again to all of our talented speakers, the dedicated volunteers who make this event happen, Confetti Inc. for sponsorship, and everyone who attended and interacted during the airing of the conference!”

A treatise on fishing (Catapult for Hire Development)
“I’ve always enjoyed fishing in video games which is funny because I’ve never really spawned an interest in fishing outdoors. Don’t get me wrong, I love being out in nature but for some reason fishing has never baited me in. I think it has something to do with all of the waiting. You select your bait, cast and wait.”

The Explosive Launch Strategy (radiangames)
“I’ve tried various strategies in launching my games, and the one that’s worked the best for me has been the sneak-attack Day 1 press blast. For developers with longer development times, I’m not sure it’s the best strategy. But in my experience there’s only a certain amount of attention the press will give to each developer/publisher/etc.”

New Screens! (David Shute)
“Thought I’d give a little progress report, just to reassure you all that I’m actually doing some work, and not just living the dizzying highlife that comes with having written a moderately successful freeware indie game a couple of years ago. I am living that highlife, I should add; it’s a whirlwind of caviar, champagne and society balls round our way, but I’ve also found the time to make some progress on Two.”

Influence of gaming sites via Twitter followers (Made by Pixelate)
“The site index in Promoter now includes the Twitter name of every site and the number of followers. (As long as the site actually is on Twitter. I can’t really relate to why some sites choose not to.) This should help you to get an idea about the influence and reach of any gaming-related site.”

Penny Arcade’s On the Rainslick Precipice of Darkness 3 will be at PAX East 2012! (Zeboyd Games)
“PAX East plans! We’re going to have a booth at PAX East showing off Penny Arcade’s On the Rainslick Precipice of Darkness 3 so be sure to stop by so you can check out and play the first part of the game.”

Botanicula Cover Art (Amanita Design)
“Relax, it’s just the cover, not the game yet (which is coming soon as you already know).”
