Well this is quite interesting indeed! Not a few days after PEGI rated Fez for release in Europe, we stumble across Spelunky as being rated as well! The game, which is a more graphically enhanced version of Derek Yu’s PC Spelunky (along with other features I believe) has been in development for what has seemed like ages so, now that it has been rated, we should surely rejoice in the fact that it will be released soon, as with Fez, right?
Not so fast. When I saw that Spelunky was released I started doing a cursory search for other notable indie games and while most returned with nothing, one other notable title did get rated: Retro City Rampage. Which normally might be reason for celebration as its one of my most anticipated games for this year (2012), but for the fact that it was rated back in October…
So if it was rated in October and we’ve yet to see it released then I can only assume that PEGI is a bit looser with their ratings system and is not such a good indicator of an imminent release as we might have previously thought, unfortunately.
Oh and if your curious Spelunky was rated 7+ and Retro City Rampage was rated 12+.
For their part, ESRB has not rated any of he three titles so I guess we’ll hold off our excitement until we see an ESRB rating.
