A few notable indies have recently come out with some music-related items that ought to be enjoyed, so I thought it best to pass them along here. Each of these titles have major musical support behind them that goes above and beyond serving the simple purpose of looping audibly in the background during gameplay, and what results from these efforts are sounds so good they stick with you far beyond the point when you put down the controller.
Super Meat Boy
Originally composed by the now legendary Danny B., the Super Meat Boy soundtrack has just been given the same treatment by Brent Kennedy that many of my favorite JRPG soundtracks were given at some point: tribute, via the piano.
You can check out all ten of Kennedy’s tracks now on bandcamp, as well as purchase the album there for just $5. That purchase will net you a PDF sheet music download of all the arrangements as well. Here’s one of the samples that apparently prompted Danny B. to encourage Kennedy to put together the full album we now have access to:
Journey
Thatgamecompany’s PSN masterpiece in waiting Journey promises to deliver one of the most splendid indie gaming experiences of the year, and it appears the game’s music will be no exception there. Have a listen at their musical journey trailer they recently unveiled on the US Playstation Blog. It’s rather breathtaking stuff:
Bastion
Lastly, a very cool video of Supergiant’s audio director Darren Korb and vocalist Ashley Barrett performing Bastion tracks ”Build that Wall” and “Setting Sail, Coming Home” (or a mash-up of it anyway) in an open door, one guitar, two couch session. Thanks to our friend John Polson at IndieGames for pointing this one out:
