It’s a title we’ve covered a couple of times before on this site, but it is absolutely worth keeping in mind for the coming year as well. Superflat Games’ Lone Survivor is still in development and, with any luck, less than six weeks away from completion if the recent blog posts by one man dev team, Jasper Byrne, are to be believed.
The most recent information displayed on Superflat’s site concerns initial attempts to create a survival adventure game by the name of ‘Amnesia’ (absolutely no relation to Frictional’s recent horror output). Some fascinating pictures show the project in various stages of development, through engine changes and switches in visual style before the whole thing was jacked in for ‘getting too ambitious’.
Byrne then moved on to production of Lone Survivor – something he hoped would be ‘small, silly, manageable’, but which, in fact, just turned into the game he had previously ceased work on. It’s well worth exploring these images if only to see how much work and thought can be in involved in transporting a product from mind to matter, often with no guarantee of final release.
If you weren’t previously aware of Lone Survivor, or if you’ve simply forgotten the gist of the tale, here’s a quick precis:-
From the creator of Soul Brother & Soundless Mountain II, a bold step forward in psychological horror. The nameless ‘You’ must survive a city ravaged by disease, battling hallucinations, the only one left alive, by any means. How much of what he sees is even real?
With influences as diverse as David Lynch, Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid, this is an adult game with a unique visual style, and unique survival mechanics.
Let’s hope we hear some firm release info in the very near future.
