Links this evening has some clarification with all the big news swirling around following the premiere of Indie Game: The Movie at Sundance last week. Plenty of new for/from developers, game picks, and of course the usual round of interviews.
Indie Game: The Movie: The (Potential) HBO Series (IndieGames.com)
“Amid the Sundance Festival thrills and sensations, rumors surfaced today that Indie Game: The Movie (IGTM) was going to be made into a half-hour comedy series on HBO. There’s a bit of truth to that, shares Blinkworks Media’s James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot on IGTM’s Facebook page: “HBO has optioned IGTM for the basis of a (fictional) series.” However, they reassure everyone that it will not be a comedy, nor will it be a sitcom.”
Student game dev competition Dare to be Digital now accepting applicants (Gamasutra)
“Organizers for Dare to be Digital are now accepting applications for their student game development competition, which will take place between June 11 and August 12 at Scotland’s University of Abertay Dundee this year.”
Indie Jeff’s Weekly Pick: AirMech (alpha) (Shacknews)
“A few months ago, when I first heard about indie developer Carbon Games’ upcoming action-RTS title, AirMech, I was immediately instilled with cautious optimism. One reason for my excitement is that several members of Carbon’s team worked at Titan Studios on the downloadable PSN title, Fat Princess, but most of my enthusiasm stemmed from the new, yet familiar, type of gameplay experience that AirMech is aiming to provide. I recently had a chance to spend some time playing the latest alpha build of AirMech, and though it’s still very much being actively developed, I’m pleased to report that it’s already wicked fun.”
Clones: Advancing the Discussion (Vlambeer)
“Some pretty busy weeks have passed lately, with the Super Crate Box iOS updates taking up most of the time that wasn’t invested in Ridiculous Fishing or GUN GODZ. One thing we’ve been working on behind the scenes was a talk about Game Cloning that we wanted to give over at the Game Developers Conference.”

“Game development has become more accessible to non-professionals with tool suites such as GameSalad, which is what 11-year-old Conner Haines used to start his own studio, Flip Flop Games. Through Flip Flop, Haines began the BElieve program, where he turns game ideas from cancer patients age 5-12 into real iOS titles, with all profit going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.”
IGF Factor 2012: Atom Zombie Smasher (Rock, Paper, Shotgun)
“And so our series of interviews with the finalists in this year’s IGF continues… High-speed, high (un)death toll strategy game Atom Zombie Smasher is up for the Excellence in Design prize at this year’s Independent Games Festival. Here, we chat to Blendo Games’ Brendon Chung about his origins as an indie dev, how people are creating their own narrative arcs in AZS, and his answer to the most important question of all.”
Spilt Milk Studios Announce: Smash The Block (IndieGames.com)
“One of my favourite mobile games of 2011 was Hard Lines from Spilt Milk Studios, a modern update of the Snake formula, with pretty Tron-inspired neon graphics, great controls, and a decent sense of humour. Having recently broke 300k downloads on iOS with Hard Lines, it seems like like as good a time as any for them to announce their next release. Enter: Smash The Block.”
Indie Pitch: Platagolf (Joystiq)
“This week, (Pirate Captain) Javier Abud combines the challenge of mini-golf with classic platforming with Platagolf.”
