For any that are unfamiliar with BlindGiRl, GLPeas’ hauntingly unique platformer for XBLIG, this news may not be of much merit. However, BlindGiRl was a fantastic dollar (80 MSP) title worth playing, and its sequel — released Dec. 30th — seems far improved. As with the first game, you guide your character through mazes, unable to see physically where you are going but able to utilize sound waves to help construct your environment. Unlike the first game, though, there are a few more twists.
For one thing, the addition of cooperative split-screen can only help the game. The first often felt lonely, and perhaps there will be some relief having a friend or companion help you traverse the darkness. BlindGirl2 was designed with co-op in mind, so don’t think it’s just a slap-on tactic to get more sales. How true that is, though, we’ll leave up to you until our review.
“Here split-screen is not just a visualisation aid but part of the puzzle itself, as important parts of the level only become visible with well-judged placement of the 2 characters. Some important parts of the level will never be fully revealed at all – trapped within the void between panes – and requiring player estimation of the waves travelling through.”
There are also new beast types, wall types, and more use of the scream mechanic. Here’s a revised list of features:
- Co-op play for 2 simultaneous controllers, as well as retaining single play.
- Dynamic split screen, based on player separation.
- Colour-blind simulation linked to player separation distance.
- 22 new levels/90+ puzzle rooms.
- The additional power of blue screams, to wake, lure and break new obstacles.
Like its predecessor, BlindGiRl2 is available for 80 MSP ($1) on Xbox Live Indie Games.
