Steaming Up For A Very Indie Christmas

I hear a rumbling. The sound of a thousand reindeer’s hooves. The sound of many jolly fat men falling down chimneys. And the sound of a plethora of indie games on Steam updating all at once, adding new content, levels, achievements and more. It’s no secret that Valve have strong ties with a great many indie studios, but I think they might just be pulling out all the stops today.

So far, the most visibly sizeable update is to FPS/Tower Defense hybrid Sanctum, as shown in the screenshot above. A whole new Christmas-themed level, free and playable in all available modes and including co-op, and a present-hoarding achievement to gain, too. Ambitious RTS/FPS blend Nuclear Dawn just began it’s free weekend event (with discount to match), and among the achievements added in the latest build are a few amusing Christmas-themed goals to shoot for.

Rock Of Ages seems to have picked up some Christmas themed content as well – ever felt like rolling a giant snowball through art history instead of a boulder? You can do that now. And a bunch of other games just updated all simultaneously for me a few moments ago, not limited to but including Trine 2, Orcs Must die and Anomaly: Warzone Earth. Given the enormous wave of content that indie developers all over produced for the Portal 2/Potato Pack event, it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw a lot more free content coming our way over the next week or two.

Keep watching the sky – it might just start snowing any moment.
