Pid: A Cute, Gravity-based Retro Platformer

Most regulars at DIY should know by now that I’m a sucker for a good ol’ fashion platformer. They’re my achilles heel when it comes to video games and, more often than not, I’ll write about it and play it no matter how it looks because, well, I can usually find some sort of enjoyment out of them. In any case, today’s game instantly shot to the top of my “do want” list, but I don’t think it’ll just be relegated to me this time.

Pid is a gorgeous platformer developed by Swedish developers Might & Delight. Here’s their official description:

Pid is a platform game that will turn everything you know about 2D gameplay upside down. You play as a young boy that gets stranded on an old remote planet. He must fight off a variety of malicious robots bent on stopping him and befriend unlikely allies to shed light on a huge conspiracy that keeps the planet mesmerized and prevents him from ever reaching home.

The game was only announced yesterday so the fact that they already have a trailer and a significant amount of gameplay is pretty damn impressive.

Even better the game will feature a 2 player co-op mode so that you and a buddy can play through the game together. It’s pretty rare that we get side scrolling platformers that are multiplayer so this is a welcome feature.

As for the developers themselves? Well, they’re a few guys who were part of the company previously responsible for the excellent Bionic Commando: Rearmed XBLA game. So I guess it’s not really a big surprise that their newest game is another platformer that looks as good as this.

Pid is due for a release sometime in 2012, although no further details were released. The game is due for a PC, XBLA and PSN release.
