Notch recently stepped down from developing full time at Mojang. Since the game was officially released this past November I’m sure he was looking for some vacation time. So where did he end up? Ludum Dare, of course! Notch is a prolific indie developer and, as such, it would only make sense that he’d join in on the weekend’s fun.
For this year’s competition (and we’ll have more on many of the other games tomorrow) Notch created Minicraft, a 2D top-down perspective version of Minecraft. Notch created Minicraft because he said it was going to get compared to Minecraft anyways.
Anyway the game is pretty simple and does an amiable job of re-creating Minecraft except with a more simplified nature to it. The game still has zombies and other baddies with which to kill, although I have yet to find a creeper. You’ll also still be able to hack down trees and use a workbench to create new things. All in all, it’s a faithful representation of Notch’s most famous title.
The game is free to play, in the browser, so if you’ve got a few minutes check out Minicraft.
