Alright guys, prepare to set apart the next 100 or so hours of your life to the side. I’m sorry to have to do this to you, but it’s my job. In any case, I’ve just stumbled upon Epic Inventor a free-to-play RPG/RTS platformer that allows you to build your own cities, NPCs, turrets, robots, etc. by mining gathering resources. Much in the same way Terraria works, actually, but don’t be confused because Epic Inventor does a few things differently as well.
The same basic idea of Terraria is there. You play as a little guy who is all alone in a big bad world full of evil and spooky things that want to kill you. You also start with next to nothing, except for a helpful robot who I’ll get to a bit later. This is where Epic Inventor is most like Terraria. In the beginning you’ll be running around and collecting resources to gather items.
As you proceed through the game though, Epic Inventor becomes less like a Terraria clone and more like a platforming RTS. You see the developers were not only inspired by Terraria, they were also hugely inspired by Age of Empires.
So, for example, at a certain point you’re not just making items, or ordinary buildings, you’re making integral resource structures like a Lumber Mill which will generate would for you at a steady rate. This wood would then power your city and your citizens or NPCs which will play a big role in the game.
Oh and did I mention you had a robot? You start out the game with a trusty robot friend (I named mine BitBlot) who will help out as much as he can by either attacking enemies for you or, if needed, carrying you at a faster rate of pace than by simply walking everywhere. It brings an interesting dynamic to the game, especially in the early stages.
Epic Inventor, as stated in the title, is 100% fee to play right now though it’s still in beta so expect it to be a tad rough around the edges. Still, for a freeware game that’s still in beta there’s a HUGE amount of stuff to do and the potential is awe-inspiring.
