Defenders of the Last Colony Meshes Twin Stick and Tower Defense Genres

Good ol’ hybrid games. Often times it can be difficult to stand out from the pack when creating a new game. I mean, on some level you can only innovate so much in story or even basic mechanics. That’s why we’re now seeing so many “hybrid” games consisting of two or more genres. Today, I’m going to show you a game that’s taken the tower defense and twin stick shooter genres and smooshed them together.

Defenders of the Last Colony, by Knitted Pixels, is, at it’s core a twin stick shooter game for the PC and Xbox Live Indie Games. It looks really good and anybody who enjoys twin stick shooters should get a kick out of this game. That said, Defenders of the Last Colony, goes a bit beyond a traditional twin stick game and offers some strategizing as well.

You see, the developers have taken aspects of the popular tower defense genre and added them in. For example, you can either play as a fighter or an engineer class ship. The former is a straight run in gun type shooter where as the latter allow you to build structures and gather resources. It really does sound quite intriguing.

Additionally, the game is being planned for 4-player co-op or versus which should add new dimensions to an already deep game.

Defenders of the Last Colony is slated for a 2012 release on Xbox Live Indie Games and PC.
