Feeling Blue – Cobalt (Alpha) Released

It’s been a long time coming, but Oxeye Game Studio have finally released their bouncing blue robot baby into the wild. Cobalt is an interesting-looking platform shooter with singleplayer, co-op and competitive modes, published under the banner of developer-turned-indie-publisher Mojang. They’re using the same business model as Minecraft, and even have the same pricing structure; 10 euros gets you (currently windows-only) alpha access now and to all future updates, until the game hits beta and rises to 15 euros. It’s planned to be a full 20 once it goes gold. Launch trailer and some gameplay footage after the break.

Erm. Yes. Well, that was silly. Here’s some extended gameplay footage of the endurance/survival mode instead! It’s all rather reminiscent of Soldat, in a very neat sorta way.

Hopefully we’ll be able to bring you some extended first thoughts on the gameplay and an official preview after the weekend, once we get our preview copies in. It definitely looks good, though – I find myself especially liking the look of how you can roll down slopes or somersault over enemies at the expense of aiming, but use bullet-time to shoot semi-accurately while rolling anyway. There’s just something not-so-quietly satisfying about the explosions and chunky clouds of metallic debris too. There’s a high level of mobility on show, which suggests that there might be a little more to competitive play than just clicking on little robots until they explode.
