Got a few minutes to spare right now? Well, you’d best not jump into this game then as it’s more likely to absorb an hour or more of your time. Now if you’ve got that, Sideroller promises to be a great action platformer that is not only very challenging, but oddly grisly at times.
The game is based around you playing as a ball. Essentially you’ll be rolling around everywhere. What makes it unique, however, is the abilities you have and the ones you pick up along the way to influence the world around you. For example, when you start you have an ability to “blast” through things with your body (ball?). As you proceed you pick up other abilities.
The game is helped along by some very smart level designs that have you racing back and forth, intelligently, through parts of the game you’d passed previously, but with a different perspective. What I mean by that is as you’re rolling around you’ll be twisting and turning upside down, but it’s not done haphazardly and it’s never a confusing endeavor.
The game is quite good and, as I said in the above, oddly gruesome at times. I haven’t personally finished it yet, so I’m not sure of the meaning (not that I would spoil it for for you anyway) but at times you’ll be presented with some very gory bits and pieces. It’s something you’ll have to experience for yourself… but don’t worry, it’s not a scary game.
Sideroller is really just a very solid browser game. In fact, I’m surprised that it’s free because it seems to provide a level of depth and enjoyment one would normally expect out of purchased titles. But such is the amazing world we live in.
Also, for those of you who simply don’t enjoy playing games in your browser, you can also download it and play it offline.
