Autumn, a season where yellow leaves fall from the trees, and green ones fall from your wallet. The fourth day of the massive Steam Thanksgiving/Autumn sales season just kicked off, and once again there’s some notable indie deals to be found in today’s lineup. Light and Dark seems to be the theme of the day; Searing solar auras, or gloomy monochrome hell? Or perhaps just a five-finger discount? After the break, the deals in question, and some thoughts on the games themselves.
Top billing today undoubtedly goes to Limbo, at 75% off. This minimalist, gloomy indie megahit earned enough money for the developers to buy back their own freedom, and shake off any outside interference in their company. It’s a short but sweet bit of puzzle platforming, reminiscent of Another World more than anything. No dialogue, just a pressing urge to push onwards through an increasingly hostile monochrome world, where everything is a threat to your existence.
My god, it’s full of stars! Second deal of the day is The Polynomial: Space Of The Music, also 75% off. A musically driven, procedurally-generated space shooter. An interesting little game to chill out with, and generally an experience roughly akin to having rainbows injected directly into your eyeballs while playing X-Wing. Possibly not the tightest or most coherent of designs, but you can’t go wrong with a soothing ambient album hooked up to this for an evening.
Third and final indie discount today is a larger game, and an impressive show of what a smaller studio can do these days. Payday: The Heist might not be a total steal at 50% off, but it makes it a much easier price to recommend the game at. Essentially, take Left 4 Dead and shift it into the context of a bank-heist, instead of surviving a zombie apocalypse. An unseen AI director sends waves of cops to disrupt you and three human or AI co-conspirator’s nefarious plans. Take hostages, crack safes, get loot. All in a day’s work for a clown-masked ne’er-do-well.
As always, these are just the notable deals for today. If you don’t see the game you want here, check the rest of the store. It’s probably best to wait until tomorrow – the final day – before buying anything, just in case prices drop further. A little patience can make your money go a lot further.
