Drowning In Games – Steam Indie Picks: Day 3

Another day, another chunk taken out of your wallet, and another few delicious indie games added to your swelling Steam account. As with all our other updates on this subject, these are just the daily deals that you should be paying attention to – there’s no shortage of other games out there. Today, just a couple of items, but they’re essentials if you like your games bright and shooty.

Top billing, without a shadow of a doubt, goes to the Serious Sam HD double-pack, at a massive 90% discount. No doubt to celebrate the release of Serious Sam 3, which has blasted its way into the hearts of many, and we’ll have a full review of it up later this afternoon. These are gloriously bright, silly, retro FPS titles with excellent co-op support. Bring a buddy or seven and shoot thousands of enemies per level with a huge arsenal of shiny guns. As an additional perk, if you own both games in the pack, you only need download The Second Encounter, as it automatically downloads the files necessary to run all the levels from the first game.

More co-op shiny shooty stuff with Sanctum at 75% off. While it sometimes seems like this is always on sale or otherwise discounted, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s an excellent game and worth a look, especially if you’ve got a couple of friends to team up with. Essentially, it’s a plain vanilla tower defense game, probably most comparable to Defense Grid. The twist is that the whole game is played from a first-person perspective, with the player alternating between building up defenses in between waves, and jumping into the firefight once the creeps wander in. While a little light on content at launch, Coffee Stain studios have expanded it a ton, and the DLC (also discounted) adds a fair number of new maps and tower types to the mix.

As with all Steam sales, it’s best to play it safe – if a game you want isn’t a daily deal, wait until the last day to buy it. You never know when the price will suddenly drop.
