‘Splosion Man Spotted In Retro City Rampage

Brian Provinciano of Vblank Entertainment has just unveiled another new trailer for his sprawling 8bit open city parody game, Retro City Rampage. This time we’re treated to a sneaky peak at one of the games many hidden bonuses. Take a look at this trailer to see a first glimpse at ‘Splosion Man in Retro City Rampage, both as a retro demake of ‘Splosion Man, and then you get to use his splode attack in the main game.

And he’s even brought Ms. Splosion Man with him. I reckon that’s a fairly authentic looking 8 bit platformer, with great era appropriate styling and movement.

I asked Brian what the deal was with the Splosion stuff in RCR, here’s what he said:

I don’t have time to play a lot of games these days, but Splosion Man was too awesome and pulled me in. I couldn’t stop playing it. The ‘splode attack was an obvious and awesome addition to Retro City Rampage. One of the core pillars of RCR is also to go far beyond GTA’s drive from A-to-B then shoot stuff formula, to boast more mission variety and hit many more genres, so adding the side scrolling sections really excited me. It really adds to the experience. I reached out to Twisted Pixel and they happened to be fans of RCR, so they were happy to give permission. They were also kind enough to add the RCR arcade cabinet to Ms. Splosion Man, which was a great bonus. We came full circle at PAX last August when I brought in a real RCR arcade cabinet on which they were able to play the 8-bit Splosion Man levels!

I wonder what other secrets Retro City Rampage might be keeping. Do we think any other games might be hidden in there? Not too long to wait now though, it’s due for release some time early next year.
