I spoke on this a little bit earlier this week with my post on indie game bundles, but now I’m broadening the subject a little bit. After all, who doesn’t enjoy a good discussion on game economics and distribution?
As more and more indie developers enter into the marketplace with new games it’s becoming clear that the current means of distribution isn’t really working. I mean, we’ll hear about a success story here and there, but by and large the markets available now are either over populated (iOS, Android), too restrictive (Steam), or otherwise just not traffic heavy enough (the rest).
For many game developers these options aren’t great. Even if they can grab some marketshare simply keeping up the momentum is too much for a lone developer to handle. I don’t know how Notch managed it, but suffice it to say he’s the exception not the rule.
As such we’ve seen bundles and groupings coming out in order to spur on sales, but those won’t work for every game, especially when we look towards the mobile landscape.
So I ask you guys: what’s the future of indie games distribution? How will the mobile, PC and console indie distribution scene look in a few years?
