Discussionware: What Is Your Favorite Indie Game? Which One Inspires You Most?

Last week I asked for your favorite developers and we got quite an eclectic mix of developers! It was really fascinating to see which developers were chosen and why. This week, however, I’m looking for your favorite indie game and which one inspires you most.

Once again, this question is posed to lots of different people so give a reason why it is your favorite or why it inspires you so much.

Personally, I have a difficult time choosing just a single game. There are so many out there that have left their mark on me that I don’t really know where to begin. My list could probably span 20-30 games… but I’ll keep it to just a couple this time.

I think first I’d have to say Cave Story, by Daisuke Amaya. While the game was originally released for free in 2004 (before great indie renaissance that we have today) it continued on to be developed across multiple platforms and has remained relevant for years beyond its original release date with the help of Nicalis. You can’t argue that the game hasn’t been an overwhelming success.

I’d also say that Machinarium was a huge inspiration to me. As many of you may or may not know, I’m always tinkering with adventure games and have hopes of one day releasing my own. Machinarium showed me an entirely new way the classic point and click adventure games could play out and it has stuck with me ever since.

But enough about my favorite games, where do you stand? What’s your favorite indie game?
