Canadian team Playbrains‘ Sideway is at the Sony booth at Comic-Con this week. Playbrains has partnered with Fuel Entertainment to bring gamers a 2D adventure platformer in a 3D environment. The main character, Nox, is somehow sucked into the world of Sideway, and he must use paint powers to defeat enemies, his nemesis Spray, rescue his friends and ultimately escape.
This pretty awesome looking piece of gaming is hitting the PlayStation Network this summer. Playbrains’ Youtube page states that it will also be coming out on PC, but the official website seems to be all about the PSN, for now.
At first glance, the cubic-based 2D/3D platforming reminds me of Bad Pilcrow’s PAX 10 selection: Vanessa Saint-Pierre Delacroix & Her Nightmare. However, Vanessa seems more puzzle based and strictly confined to a cubed world. Sideway seems much larger and more action/platformer oriented.
Check out the gameplay in this pretty rad (“rad” seemed appropriate given the spray paint context) trailer:
While I am enjoying Vanessa via a free demo, I can’t wait to try Sideway. If this is indicative of a secret summer onslaught from Sony, XBLA’s Summer of Arcade may get a run for its money.
