Limbo Wins “Best Independent Game” at Spike’s 2010 Video Game Awards

limboboat

For those of you who did not know, last night was Spike’s annual VGA event whereby they go through and pick the best games based on a panel of industry “experts.” It’s generally a mainstream affair and one that I don’t particularly enjoy, but they seem to include an independent game award each year so I’m obligated to report on it at least a little bit.

Here were last nights indie game nominees and the winner:

  • Joe Danger
  • Limbo – Winner
  • Super Meat Boy
  • The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom

All great games, seriously. Each of these are fine indie games that you should look into if you haven’t already.

Congratulations are in order to developer Playdead. I don’t believe anybody back in July could have guessed that this small indie game could have gone on to be such a huge success in both consumer, financial, and critical acclaim. While I don’t necessarily put a lot of weight into Spike’s event, I am happy to see Limbo get honored, particularly in front of a largely mainstream audience.

Meh, the Spike awards are a total joke, based on popularity and hype, not actual quality. Didn’t they give awards to the King Kong videogame before it was even out?

All of these are well known console indie games and I bet they picked Limbo purely on artsy cred so they could say “see, we treat games as art”. Super Meat Boy should have beaten it and I can think of several games I enjoyed more this year than PB Winterbottom.

I agree that the VGAs are a joke. Still, I’m not upset Limbo won. I loved Super Meat Boy, but I felt Limbo offered a more unique experience.

Sifting through all the “exclusive reveals” from the event is pretty rough unless you’re really, really into sequels.

I do indeed think they are a joke, but I have to give them credit this year for:

    1. Neil Patrick Harris.
    2. Rachel Bilson, Eliza Dushku, Olivia Munn, and the Sunny cast <3
    3. Mass Effect 3 reveal = I cannot wait.

I also thought that Super Meat Boy truly deserved the award, but Limbo is just as qualified, as well as the other candidates.

Overall, however, it’s pretty much exactly what we expected.

P.S. Sgt. Woods as Character of the Year? How? Sgt. Woods had NO character whatsoever throughout Black Ops. He’s the same generic Soap-like character they put into every CoD/war-based shooter.
