What better way to liven up our often awkward and notoriously geeky parties than with video games? Hey! It’s worked before with the inclusion of both Rock Band and the Mario Party games, why not take that idea one step forward and, this time, include a little more party and a little less video game? That’s the basic concept of B.U.T.T.O.N. which is an acronym for Brutally Unfair Tactics Totally OK Now.
The premise for B.U.T.T.O.N. is simple. You and three friends have four Xbox controllers with which you’ll be using a single button. Sounds simple, right? Well there’s a catch. In this game you aren’t simply sitting down on a couch or standing around just playing the game, this is a much more interactive game than that, in fact, one could argue that this is more of a traditional game that simply uses a video game controller rather than a full fledged video game.
Anyway, when you begin the game, you’ll be asked to place the four controller on the ground in front of the television/monitor. From there the game will dole out various actions you must take as well as “victory conditions.” These can be anything from racing in slow motion to holding down the button (presumably ‘A’) for ‘x’ amount of seconds.
Obviously the game is 90% based on the players following the rules issued, because, really there’s nothing to keep somebody from fudging the rules and just racing towards the controller at any time. Still though, it’s a unique idea and an interesting way to combine a more traditional type party game with video games, something that has been attempted before but with far too much emphasis on the video games part.
B.U.T.T.O.N. was first shown off at GDC this past year and it will be showcased again at this year’s IndieCade. The game currently has no release date as the developers continue to look for ways to distribute the game.
