As more and more developers with experience at large publishers leave to create their own companies, we’ve begun to see a noticeable uptick in the quality of several indie games. 2D Boy is a prime example of this. The company was created by two guys who had recently left their jobs at Electronic Arts to found a new indie company. Since then they’ve gone on to do wonderful things in both development and in contributing to the indie community as a whole. Supergiant Games, the developers of the as yet released Bastion, is in a similar situation.
Now, I don’t have a lot of experience with Supergiant’s first game (I certianly haven’t played it yet as PAX is still a couple days away). Despite that, however, I can say, without a doubt in my mind, that Bastion is easily one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever seen. There’s no “indie” qualifier before that statement either. It’s simply a beautiful game.
But beyond even that the game itself looks incredibly solid. We’re talking “indie game of the year” solid, for whatever year it actually gets released in.
Bastion is an action RPG. Yes, we’ve played plenty of those in the past — Torchlight, and DeathSpank to name a choice couple recent releases — but it would be really hard to simply lump Bastion in with those other titles as it really does seem to bring everything to a whole new level. Supposedly, the narrative will play a significant role in the game. I don’t know what this means exactly, but, judging by the the trailer (below), if I had to hazard a guess I’d say it has to do with the creation of the world you are playing in.
We’ll have more information this weekend when we get our hands all over the game. Until then, I’ll leave you with some words of wisdom: keep and eye on this game.
