• Onwards and Upwards with Comic Jumper [PAX]

Twisted Pixel is something of an indie success story – and that might be putting it mildly. While there are around twenty employees now, with more being considered as I type, the company was originally started with just a few. The team jumped up to six or seven folks for The Maw’s development and moved [...]

  • Yeyifications!… Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale [Review]

Next time you’re off galavanting around a massive RPG world, slaying monsters and fulfilling your destiny, spare a thought for the shopkeeper in the last town who sold you all your gear. Without them, you’d be a nobody – you’d have no sword, no armor, no healing products. Confined to a live of standing behind [...]

  • Buckets of Blood Means Nothing in The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile [PAX]

While roaming around the halls of PAX10, we were lucky enough to stumble upon Ska Studios, the guys who made both the original Dishwasher and I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1. And, since we’re super best friends with them, we were able to sit down with both James (the founder) and the their new game [...]

  • Bursting with Innuendo: Fowl Space [PAX]

Pixelante Games, the Vancouver-based group of independent developers, want to make you laugh at all the dick jokes in their new game Fowl Space, or at least it shows that they cracked themselves up while creating the title. And I think there’s something to be said for developers who enjoyeds creating the product they release, [...]

  • Creating a World in Bastion [PAX]

I covered Bastion a small bit a few days ago in our run up to PAX. Back then I knew little about just what the game was and what it was going to offer beyond some small details given by developers Supergiant Games. Luckily for you (and me) I’ve just returned from my first play [...]

  • Platformance000Allow me to start this off by stating: if you are in any way easily frustrated, or do not take to games that are unforgiving, unrelenting, and generally a pain in the ass very well, then you probably should not check out Platformance. This is easily one of the most difficult games on the Xbox Live Indie Games channel. However, for those of you who do enjoy these types of games, welcome home…

Platformance is a game with a simple premise. You’re the knight in shining armor and you’re attempting to rescue the stereotypical damsel in distress… the princess. To do this you must make your way through an entire castle filled with traps, monsters, and all sorts of obstacles that will make getting to the princess exceedingly difficult.

But don’t fret too much. While you can easily die over a hundred times within the span of ten minutes, the game felt obligated to supple you with a wealth of check points which makes progress feel not quite as hampered when that invetitable spike comes crashing down on that teeny tiny skull of yours.

Of course, don’t mistake the game’s abundance of checkpoints for a weakness. While they do help you progress faster, their real purpose is simply to enable you to not get a “Game Over” quite so easily. You see, after the first few checkpoints, you’ll soon have a ghost stalking your every move. Slowly, but surely he’ll be making his way towards you. While you have an infinite amount of lives normally, should the ghost tough you even once it’s “Game Over,” time to restart.

Despite it’s difficulty, however, I found that Platformance was a welcome change in the XBLIG atmosphere. There’s just a single level, with three difficulties, and pretty awesome castle for you to romp through.

The games graphics are also deliciously retro, and features a unique zoom in and out feature which definitely helps with some of the latter obstacle. Additionally, the games soundtrack also has a nice little jingle to it that can easily get stuck in your head, if you’re not careful.

Overall, for a buck, I have trouble not recommending this XBLIG title to anybody looking for something fun — and cheap — to idle away an hour or so.

[This is not a review. This is simple a "first impressions" piece based on less than an hour of gameplay.]

This game is a lot of fun. I heard about it on another blog earlier this week and had to check it out for myself.

The game is quite challenging, but once you know what you have to do it’s just a matter of execution. I still haven’t beaten the game on Hardcore mode (the ghost is more like Sonic), but I will be trying again tonight.

There are a lot of subtle details and polish in the game that make it even better. The game designers really took their time on this one to give the player a wide range of puzzles & challenges to solve, which any gamer can appreciate.

I’m still working on normal. My biggest complaint with it so far is that the spring jumpers (if that’s what they’re called) don;t seem to work correctly. Sometimes I’ll spend 2 minutes just trying to get the extra jump.
