World of Goo vs. Torchlight [Tournament]

WorldofGoovsTorchlightFor our second tournament today, we have another two “indie heavyweights” in World of Goo vs. Torchlight.

First up we have World of Goo. If there is a more popular and beloved indie game out there then I certainly don’t know about it. World of Goo has garnered massive amounts of indie cred by introducing awesome “pay what you want” sales and, generally, just being a great game developed by two ex-EA employees.

Certainly not to be ignored, however, is Torchlight the indie action RPG that is constantly being hailed as the best action RPG to be released since Diablo 2 back in 1998. Torchlight garnered great reviews from critics and gamers alike. While the company might not “technically’ be indie anymore, Torchlight was still an amazing independent achievement.

So which of these two indie darlings will reach the quarter finals? Cast your vote now!

You gotta spread the word to the communities. The Torchlight community caught wind of this tournament and now they’re all over it.

I came here via the Torchlight twitter, but this match has got me stumped. Absolutely love both these games…
I think I’ll go with teh goo.

I adore both Torchlight and World of Goo, so this was an impossible choice for me. However, I have to look at what each game did.

Torchlight was an amazing game to be sure, but it’s got it’s predecessors: Diablo, Mythos, Fate, Titan Quest, etc. I am a total Runic fanboy, having followed them since the Mythos alpha test (yes, alpha). However, there’s no way I can truly answer if Torchlight is any better than Diablo. It’s certainly the best game since Diablo II, but whether it’s truly the best ever is a hotly contested topic.

Then we have World of Goo. World of Goo is a puzzle game like no other. I usually hate puzzle games with a passion because of their lack of any real depth. Most puzzle games are shallow “do this complicated task for no reason” affairs or are simply Bejeweled clones (again, with no depth). World of Goo completely shatters every idea about puzzle games, offering a rich, intriguing story. And the music, THE MUSIC! The amazing choral soundtrack firmly places World of Goo in a league of its own. Not only is it the best puzzle game of all time, it’s an indie game that has done things the large companies have come nowhere close to.

In conclusion, although it hurts me to say it, World of Goo is a better game than Torchlight. World of Goo will continue to be THE puzzle game for years. Torchlight, though deserving of every award it has won and then some, simply has not done to the arpg genre that World of Goo did to the puzzle genre. My vote goes to World of Goo.

      Well said.

This was a toughie. World of Goo is an amazing game, and the devs have done some great works and the charity stuff was awesome too…but I had to go with Torchlight. Not only is the game great, but the story behind it is a great comeback story as well. The guys at Runic could have split up, moved on, done their best to forget about the loss of all the work they did on Mythos, but they chose to stick together and pick themselves up by their bootstraps, and now they have this great game out that has done well beyond their dreams, while the Mythos IP languishes, passed from developer to developer, it’s future uncertain.

How can I not vote for such a comeback?
