• Out of the Frying Pan… Radiangames Inferno [Review]

Radiangames continues its beautiful shooter series on Xbox Live Indie Games with the third release in the series, Inferno. We loved the first release JoyJoy, but weren’t too keen on the follow-up Crossfire… so the great news is that Inferno is pretty much a maze-orientated version of JoyJoy.
With some great level design, gorgeous visuals and [...]

  • So We’ve Got This Thing Called a Forum…

So get this, true story, there are these things all around the world wide web (the internets!) that are called forums. They’re termed after the ancient Roman political conferences where all the senators would gather in a “forum” to discuss issues regarding their society and laws. As it turns out, the internet has taken this [...]

With the round of 16 finally coming to an end last Friday, specifically timed to coincide with the start of the World Cup (not really), we can now finally move onto the Quarter Finals. You know, for the tournament you actually care about (just kidding, I’m a huge World Cup fan).

Anyway, let’s review the results from last week:

As expected, thanks to the boost by the community, Shattered Horizon broke through the round of 16, ensuring Knytt would not go any further in this tournament. On the other side, however, Love the indie MMO, just barely eeked out a victory against Ben There, Dan That the hilarious adventure freeware title. Now, Love and Shattered Horizon will be duking it out over the next week.

Moving on, N soundly defeated it’s opponent in Braid. A surprising victory considering how loved Braid was upon release, but definitely a testament to N’s ability to keeping an active community. Likewise, indie action RPG Torchlight soundly defeated World of Goo, which is surprising because for a while World of Goo and Torchlight were neck in neck, until the Torchlight community rallied around their game and sent it above and beyond. This now means that N and Torchlight will be facing off against each other in the quarter finals. This is a huge match up.

Up next, Spelunky shot down the last flash game in our tournament: The Majesty of Colors. Not that it was a huge surprise as the Spelunky community is pretty serious about their game. Additionally, Galcon Fusion has defeated Beat Hazard to move on to the quarter finals. Now Spelunky and Galcon Fusion will be facing off against each other. Should make up for an interesting match up.

Finally, it appears that Noitu Love 2 rallied to defeat our indie game of the year for 2009, Machinarium which is definitely not an easy opponent. Additionally, long time indie fan favorite, Dwarf Fortress, will be continuing on to the quarter finals as it defeated Defense Grid in the round of 16. Noitu Love 2 and Dwarf Fortress will be facing off in the quarter finals.

So that’s the wrap up for the round of 16. Great efforts by all the games involved. Starting tomorrow we’ll launch our first quarter finals match up, and round out the week with one for each day.

So, any match ups in particular that you’re looking forward to?

N vs dwarf fortress because, having now played DF, I have no idea who to support.

    2. raigan says:

actually, N is a Flash game, so technically there’s still one in the contest :)

    3. Daikenkai says:

I’m looking forward to the N matchup.

But from looking at the comments as of now, N is (hopefully) going to go on through…

      • TL is not Indie says:

uhh sorry to burst your DIY tourney here but Torchlight should be disqualified. Since when did a $2.5 million dollar Perfect World (LARGE Chinese Publisher) become an “Indie” game?!?

Don’t get me wrong TL was a good game but I’dhardly call it “indie”.

    7. tooju4u says:

I just posted a similar comment under the TL vs. N competition. I agree, I think TL is an awesome game but this seems totally unfair. The other games were generally created by one or a couple people working off their own dime.

    8. Internetguy says:

Random aside: Why did you choose Don’t Look Back instead of VVVVVV?

      • User avatar Geoff Gibson says:

We didn’t. All games were nominated by gamers. The games with the most nominations got into the tournament. It just so happened that Don’t Look Back was nominated more times than VVVVVV.
