Hello Games has officially announced (via Eurogamer) that their first game, Joe Danger, will be heading to the PS3 first and exclusively, for a time. Without making any promises, the team finished that statement by adding that the 360 and PC version may follow at a later date.
This is completely understandable for the team to pursue a single console instead of three. As a team of four, the guys are probably already spread pretty thin making such a great looking game. I can’t even imagine how much extra effort it would take to get that game working and running smoothly across all three platforms.
That said, however, I do wonder if the guys at Hello games have made the right choice. Console loyalty left aside, it just seems like the Xbox 360 would have been the console to develop for. Microsoft has a history of supporting/marketing indie games through their XBLA channel even beyond what MGS is publishing (‘Splosion Man for instance). Sony does not, I mean, how well marketed was Trine?
Likewise, it’s my understanding that developing to the 360 and then porting to the PC is relatively painless — correct me if I’m wrong — where as going from the PS3 to the PC is about as difficult as going from the PS3 to the 360. This is probably due to a similar architecture in both Windows and the Xbox 360. Seems like they could’ve got a nice 2-for-1 deal with the Xbox 360/PC combo.
Of course, we don’t know what reasons were at play here, and we certainly look forward to playing the game no matter the console. As of this writing, right now, I’m fairly confident that the game will be a successful venture. Something few indie devs can claim.
We’ll put in a word to Hello Games now for clarification on the Xbox 360/PC.
