Some promising games from TIGSource’s Assemblee competition

CoinThe second round of Assemblee wrapped up a few days ago, and I’ve been looking over the completed entries for hidden gems.

I’ve been pretty impressed with what the game designers were able to come up with, since there were working with sound and sprite resources that were created without a game in mind. After the jump are three games that really caught my attention.

Coin

I really hoped somebody would use the cowgirl sprit I talked about in this earlier post, and Mr. K delivered with Coin. It’s a simple run-and-gun platformer where the goal is to collect the coins that populate the stage and spill out of the fallen enemies. There’s an online leaderboard for adept coin collectors to compete against one another.

Another game that uses the cowgirl sprites is porousnapkin’s Cowgirl and the Mushroom Men of Genocide. He tried to apply the bullet-hell shoot-em-up style to the platforming genre, which sounds like something I’d love to play, but I couldn’t get the game to work on my 64-bit Windows 7 build.

Realm of the Mad God

Realm of the Mad God

Wild Shadow’s Realm of the Mad God is 8-bit MMORPG in the very early stages of development. It has a swords and sorcery setting; you pick one of five classes and roam the countryside slaying everything you find. There isn’t much to do right now besides slay and chat, but I think the game has potential, and Wild Shadow seems intent on developing the game further.

Because it plays in Flash, there’s nothing to download, so it seems like the perfect time sink for downtime at work. If only the firewall at my work didn’t block access.

Bitworld

Bitworld

Ivan’s 2.5D rougelike, Bitworld, oozes charm. From the well-written characters that you meet in the beginning to the character’s rocking excuse for a gait, everything I did put a smile on my face.

The OS X version didn’t work on my iBook G4, but the Windows build worked on my machine.
