War Is Random, and We Want You

We Want YouWe Want You, the first release from Quicksand Games, is an addictive action platformer about war. Though it lacks the polish of its procedurally generated predecessor Spelunky, the game keeps pulling you back in with solid controls, expansive levels and a slow-burn of a story.

You drop into a war zone at the top, and time progresses as you jump down from platform to platform, killing or avoiding any enemy you see. The goal is to make it from the drop point to base camp. You can use mines to destroy blocks below you, but even with that help it will probably take a few tries to make it through the first year, let alone all the way back to base camp. As you fall, the enemy soldiers become more mobile and more dangerous. The first batch are content to sit and wait for you to come get them, but quickly they start wearing ninja suits and chasing you down.

There are ten weapons to find, and various armors and power-ups to keep an eye out for, but you’ll spend most of the game with a pistol and blood seeping through your clothes. As you fall, kill soldiers and free hostages, headlines from back home like “VETERANS ON CEREAL BOXES: Exploitative?” and “MOTHERS: 10 ways to recruit your sons” keep you informed and occasionally mention how the unnamed hero you’re playing is doing. We Want You first appeared on TIGForums, but the most recent version is available for free at Quicksand Games.

The team is currently working on another platformer called Freedom (not to be confused with the Freedom! you may have played at school on an Apple IIe).
