XBLIG Pick of the Week: They Came From the Ground

November 4, 2009 | Geoff Gibson

TheyCameFromtheGroundEvery week about a dozen new Xbox Live Indie Games (XBLIG) come out. Unfortunately, many go unnoticed which is why we are going to start this new series to highlight one, exceptional, indie game that was released to the service over the last seven days or so — we aren”t going to be super scientific about this. Anyways, this week’s game just happens to be They Came from the Ground.

They Came from the Ground is a very simple concept, essentially volleyball. But it also takes that concept and produces very addictive gameplay out of it. The idea is simple, you play as one ball-shaped creature and the computer or a friend plays as the other. From there you play a game of  “volleyball” and attempt to score on the other with either one or two game balls. One of the best parts is the fact that you can actually jump over into your opponents side of the game and attempt to score on them from their side. Be warned, though, this will also leave your own side defenseless.

They Came from the Ground is only 80 points. Last night, while at a friend’s house, I sat down and played this game for almost 2 hours. For the mere price of a single dollar, I think I got my money’s worth. For that reason, I have a very hard time not making this our XBLIG Pick of the Week.
