If there has been one staple to the current generation of consoles in terms of game engines, it has got to be the Unreal 3 Engine. Epic’s engine has served countless games throughout this generation’s lifetime and it shows no signs of slowing down over the next few years. It has become such a household name to gamers that a game company can simply mention that they’ve licensed the Unreal Engine and they’ll instantly gain a presence within that gamer’s mind. Needless to say, it’s powerful shi*t.

Which is why it’s also awesome that the engine is now free for anybody to download and play with. That’s right indie devs, you can now download and create a game using the exact same engine that powers the Gears of War franchise. How bad ass is that?

We are very excited to see the great amounts of work that come to fruition because of this. Now we just gotta sit back and wait… which is actually the hardest part.
