Game Canada: Indie Arcade Machine Torontron

Sat. 21 2009 | Erik Johnson

torontron []Meet the Torontron, put together by indie games advocacy group The Hand Eye Society, the masterpiece is an arcade cabinet retrofitted to play a half dozen games made by indie developers from Toronto. The apparatus debuted at Canadian Zine fair Canzine earlier this month, where the group showed it off at the event’s Artcade portion and held a Q&A on how to make a similar machine yourself.

The Torontron’s current line-up of games includes Miguel Sternberg’s Night of the Cephalopods, Jph Wacheski’s lockOn 2, Rosemary Moscoe’s Albacross, Jim McGinley’s Mondrian Provoked, BananasInPajammers’ Monster Puncher, and Team Entelechynt’s Heavy Weather. With each title having simple controls as the cabinet only provides a joystick and two buttons.

Apparently, Torontron has done well to portray an accessible indie scene in Toronto, but The Hand Eye Society isn’t stopping there. The group is currently taking suggestions on other events and locations to tour their awesome-chine as well. Seriously, score one for Canada.
