Ambitious Remake of Arcade Classic Toki

November 19, 2009 | Geoff Gibson

TokiDoes anybody here remember Toki? It was an early arcade game that was released and developed by Taito. Well, even if you don’t there’s reason to start getting interested now as Golgoth Studio is prepping an ambitious remake of the classic title for next year and, believe me, it’s lookin’ good.

Toki., like most games released back then, is a fairly standard platformer. Actually it’s more like a shooter-platformer like Contra was. Instead of a military trooper however, your a pre-historic ape. Needess to say, something bad happens — girl gets kidnapped — and you’ve got to right the wrongs. Fairly standard plot for most games, especially those created in the 80s.

While I can’t speak for it’s gameplay, I honestly never played the original, I can say that the game is looking amazing over its previous iteration. The graphics are looking incredibly detailed and smooth.

But hey, don’t take my word for it, catch the trailer after the break.

The game is planned for a XBLA, PSN and PC release next year.

Wow, a remake of Toki out of nowhere, that’s pretty cool. Who are these guys? They seem to have come out of nowhere and gotten a pretty good deal for their very first gig (Toki ain’t exactly Pac-Man, but it’s a semi-classic, at least). Wonder what they did to get Taito’s attention?

Gee, I’m gonna check out these guys’ website and see what they’re about, hmm lemme click around their blog and HOLY S**T THEIR NEXT PROJECT IS A REMAKE OF JOE AND MAC?!?!?:

Holy cow, why is this not on every game news website as the biggest story of the year??? Seriously, that’s some of the best news I’ve heard all year. Friggin AWESOME.

Yeah, I’ve been talking with the developer today and apparently their entire goal, an an indie game studio, is to remake classic games like Toki and Joe and Mac. Pretty bad ass if you ask me.

After seeing the amazing work they’ve done on Toki, I’m genuinely excited for whatever they do in the future.
